Kornheiser to Join 'Monday Night Football'

Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser will be joining the ESPN broadcast booth for "Monday Night Football" next season, the sports network said today.

Kornheiser will be part of a three-man team including Mike Tirico and former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann, ESPN reported on its Website. Suzy Kolber and Michelle Tafoya will be sideline reporters.

The NFL staple is moving from Disney-owned ABC to Disney-owned ESPN starting next fall.

Terms of the deal were unavailable.

"This Monday Night Football team enthusiastically embraces our vision for sports television's signature series," said ESPN Executive Vice President John Skipper in a written statement.

ESPN said that Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon will take their show "Pardon The Interruption" on the road on Mondays during the football season, broadcasting from the site of the football game.

Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, The Post's assistant managing editor for sports, expressed optimism last night that Kornheiser's career at the paper would continue.

"We're happy for Tony," Garcia-Ruiz said. "But we still want him to continue to work for the paper. That's what's best for us and for our readers."

"Al Michaels, the play-by-play voice of Monday Night Football from 1986 through Sunday's Super Bowl in Detroit, will not return to either broadcast," the ESPN statement said.

That is the worst booth in the history of sports broadcasting.

No, that would be when MNF had Boomer Esiason.

I think that this will be fine, but then again I am the only person in America who enjoys (its a morbid enjoyment, but its enjoyment) Theisman.

Tirico is a good PBP guy and Tony K will add some good smarminess: I also think that he will openly make fun of Theisman on air which could lead to a brawl.

If ESPN had any sack, they would have gone with the all black Tirico and Sterling Sharpe booth they used last season.

I like Theisman, like him a lot (second favorite QB behind Billy Kilmer, and a Jersey kid to boot)--I thought the chemistry he had with Maguire and Patrick was great, the booth on Sunday night was wayyyyy better than the booth on Monday night.

The hidden gem in all of this is the Mike Breen gets a promotion for the NBA games. Breen is dynamite, been listening to him ever since he was the sports guy on Imus in the early '90's.

I love Kornheiser's "I'll be fired before the first preseason game is over" comments yesterday. He might work out, but I'm not sure.

I hate Tirico. What kind of a Tom does Hockey broadcasts?

I would love to see Joe T vs. TK...

Maybe TK will do my all time dream, and just break sticks and pencils behind Theisman's ear..and thena ny time he makes a stupid comment Roll Tape on LT ending his career.

eegadds we don't see eye to eye.

sunday night were by far the most gnaw gnashingly bad announcers ever. They had zero chemistry - - though all of them bad, they somehow made each other worse.

monday nights were the most pleasurable team i've ever listened to. Even bad games were fun with those guys.

I'd rather have Kornheiser than Dennis Miller

It would be funnier if they put Riggins in the booth with Theismann.

Anybody remember WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back when TNT used to split the NFL Sunday Night season schedule with ESPN (late '80s/early '90s)? That Skip Caray/Pat Haden booth was one hilarious train wreck of a booth. Skip was openly drunk pretty much every broadcast, and that would bring out his comic gold.

I remember one Oilers game back when the really outlandish league-mandated sideline garb was in vogue among coaches, and the following exchange took place during a time out:

Haden: "There's Warren Moon talking things over with Jack Pardee. I wonder what he's saying."
Caray (in his slightly slurred David Brinkley-esque delivery): "He's probably asking him, 'Where'd ya get that shirt?'."

And there were THOUSANDS of swipes at Haden's mediocre pro QB career taken by Caray, as well. Now THAT was a great booth!

I'll applaud this if it means Maguire has been fired and banned from ever calling a football game.

I fucking love Skip. He is gold, pure gold.

And I agree with Bilz on two things: I liked the Sunday night booth better. Michaels is a great PBP guy but Madden? Oh my garbage. I cant believe NBC hired him. Hang it up old man.

Also agrre on Mike Breen. He was great on Imus and does a fine job callin b-ball. Good on him.

The only thing I want to know is if the games will still take like five hours to watch, now they aren't on ABC with all the tv timeouts and promos for crappy shows.
I can never stand to watch a game for more than a half when it comes to pro football, I'm glad most channels that broadcast college football do three games back to back or only alot 3.5hrs for a broadcast.

Broadcaster to join Madden on Sunday nights

NEW YORK (AP) -- Al Michaels is moving to NBC and will broadcast Sunday night NFL games with John Madden, his partner on ABC during the past four seasons.

In exchange for letting Michaels out of his contract with ABC and ESPN, which are owned by The Walt Disney Co., NBC Universal sold ESPN cable rights to Friday coverage of the next four Ryder Cups, granted ESPN increased usage of Olympic highlights and sold to The Walt Disney Co. the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a character in silent cartoons made by Walt Disney from 1927-28.

Michaels had been with ABC since 1976 and was the play-by-play announcer on Monday Night Football since 1986. He said in July that he would stay with the network to become the announcer for ESPN's Monday night broadcasts, which start this year.

Michaels' mind changed during the past season, realizing he wanted to work with Madden, producer Fred Gaudelli and director Drew Esocoff, who also are moving from ABC to NBC.

"I began to realize more and more how much I was going to miss being with those people," Michaels said Thursday on a conference call. "That's my family, that's my broadcasting family."

Michaels had hoped to finish the current NBA season as ABC/ESPN's lead announcer. He is being replaced by Mike Breen.
