Listened to Boris' "Akuma No Uta" through for the first time this morning, and I think it's good enough. I still prefer "Absolutego", and believe that they are a band still capable of much more than they've done (that I've heard). Last night, I downloaded "Dronevil", something with Merzbow, and something else. They have a ton of music to be heard.

I keep seeing that thing with Merzbow in stores, and I've thought about picking it up. Let me know what you think of it.

Also, "Dronevil" is kinda just an 8 min extension of "Absolutego".

Oh, you're right. And of course I knew that I already had it.

I'll let you know about that collabo, or you can hit me up for it.

Sometimes its good just to take a step back and listen to some older classics ( and by older i mean maybe even just 3/4 years ago) that you missed first time round.

agree 100% dude. but i would not ignore new music by any means.

I've dedicated this winter to exploring (free) jazz, more specifically, any Sun Ra I can get my hands on. This winter has been great.

Right on Ish. Which artists can you turn me onto?

I've been spending a lot of time with 60's psychadelia. Stuff from The Paisleys, Coven, The Suck, Shiver, The Rose Garden, Move, The Collectors, Stained Glass, etc. While it's hit or miss, i've really been feeling some of this stuff.

Man, 60s psych is totally what I've been wanting to dip my toes in, but I'unno where to start. Lend a brother your hand!

I've not been getting into anything too obscure. Like I said, lots of Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Coltrane, etc. I've also learned that there is a burgeoning Finnish scene of free jazz and experimental music like Kemialliset Ystavat and Rauhan Orchesteri.

I picked up a Sun Ra disc at a Borders a few years back on a whim. I'd heard a bunch of Sun Ra and actually owned a few things. Sun Ra was the kind of stuff I would listen to in college while getting high and sitting around staring at the walls. The night would consist of Phish, Medeski Martin & Wood and Sun Ra.

Anyway, this live disc that I picked up at the time (Outer Space Employment Agency) totally blew my mind. It was a lot more interesting than a lot of the stuff I was listening to at the time.

As a side note, I was reminded a lot of this crazy marching band on acid vibe that some of the Sun Ra stuff can have while listening to Animal Collective. Its really only on one track (Slippi off of Here Comes the Indian), but it's really a strong correlation to my ears.

In the realm of guitar rock, but not "indie", the Reigning Sound. Garage rock ala Nuggets with perhaps the best voice in rock today. Yeah, I fucking said it. Get Time Bomb High School: covers of "Stormy Weather" and '60s garage-hit "I Don't Believe" originally by the Guilloteens, as well as a bunch of well-written originals like the title song and "Brown Paper Sack". Might be exactly what you need if you're sick of indie-rock but still like guitars. Too Much Guitar, the follow-up, is pretty amazing as well with a mixing-be-damned-turn-it-all-to-earbleed production ethic. Songs like "When You Touch Me", "Drowning", and "If You Can't Give Me Everything" are pretty unfuckwithable, imo.

Aren't the Reigning Sound from Nashville or am I totally off? I normally hate garage rawk in the vein of Mooney Suzuki/Hives/Cato Salsa Experience/Dirtbombs type shit that was big around '99 or '00. Are they anything like this?

Stu, go *here* and sample the first album on the list you're not familiar with. Continue until you judge something worth your money. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until rut ceases.

Nope, they're from Memphis. The lead singer has been in a ton of Memphis bands (The Oblivians, The Compulsive Gamblers). I wouldn't lump them in with the garage-revival bunch, really. I'd say more like the Nuggets bands. Whether you like the style in general or not, I'd say it's worth a listen.
