Okay i still have 30 quid worth of amazon gift vouchers left. I need some help.

Been a couple of really good threads on books which have led to me ordering some James Ellroy and that Bayou Farewell: The Rich Life and Tragic Death of Louisiana's Cajun Coast by Mike Tidwell book.

Favorite authors.

Kerouac
Burroughs
Bukowski
Dan Fante
Hunter. S (I would even read his ESPN Page 2 stuff even though i had no idea WTF he was talking about)
Hubert Selby jr

Anything about hobo's, alkies, drugs, lowlife, hustlers, barflys, travelling & crime. Hard to explain my tastes. I really enjoyed..I think it was Woody Guthrie's book where he travelled across the states, playing wherever he could. I'd like to read stuff on old blues players but more the lifestyle than the music. Again i apoligise if i am not explaining myself very well. Bit drunk.

Recommendation back to you MCGOORTY a Pool Room Hustler by Robert Bryne.

I'll have to check the title/author when I get home. The book is a journalist's experience pulling $20K out of savings and staking a pool hustler on a roadtrip around the US and Canada.

You might try some of Anthony Burgess' work. His best books are, A Clock Work Orange, The Wanting Seed and Honey for The Bears

Excellent, first one no but i have read Go which was great.

Will check out The First Third.

I recently read Desolate Angel by Dennis Mcnally. Not really a fan of Mcnally but it was still OK so yeah anything about the Beats would be great but i have read quite a lot.

If you haven't yet read it, I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend:
The Autobiography OF MAlcolm X

It has all the requisite crime, drugs, women, etc., plus a heaping helping of revelation that you won't find in any other book. Anywhere.

I would say it is one book that should be read by any human, anywhere.
Amazing.
Really.

part of that neal cassady book was made into the movie 'the first time i committed suicide'....and, despite an appearance by keanu reeves, is a very good flick.

i also really enjoyed the book 'the wonder boys' by michael chabon
(there's a movie for that as well. but i read the book WAY before the movie. and the book is, of course, better.)

oh, and check out....
white noise by don delillo.
(it doesn't really have to do with anything you mentioned you like....but i just have a feeling you'll like it.)

You might like what I'm reading right now...

There's a more-than-slight Selby Jr. influence on this guy - I've heard the novels go downhill, but it's less expensive to pick up this than the individual novels..

It's called "Playing Off the Rail: A Pool Hustler's Journey" by David McCumber.

I suspect you'd like Elmore Leonard. I'm not sure which book to start with, though -- you may want to peruse amazon.com's user ratings or something.
