The past few days. I've turned off all extraneous options (images, avatars, sigs) and that's made no difference.

I know what it is. At least in my (internittant) case: Google ads. On explorer, look down at the botton info line, and you'll see what's loading. When mine's crawling with everything turned off (like earlier today) it's 100% hung on google's ads loading.

The google ads not loading has caused me to refresh a bunch of times to get pages to load.
Have those ads generated any money?

I agree, it has been slow, but only certain threads. For example, that thread about the Hofner bass that Phil posted...forever and a day to open that one. I actually opened a new tab and checked email.
