I'm looking to get a new MP3 player since my 2 1/2 yr old 20GB Creative Zen Jukebox is getting low on space and battery life..Creative said it would cost about 120.00 to have the battery replaced so I said f it and now want a new MP3 player...I'm thinking about getting a 60gb Gigabeat from Toshiba, but I wanted to see if anyone out there already owns one or if someone knows anything about it...

By the time 200 gig hard drives become small enough to be portable your mobile phone will be able to stream your entire music collection.

Actually they are available. You can mod some players with laptop harddrives. They sell the kits on ebay.

I bought a phillips once, returned it two weeks later for my ipod. It was a pretty sizable piece of crap.

The screen on the Philips device looks tiny.

Well, the tiny screen makes the rest of it look big by comparison. The black space around the screen just looks like wasted space.

Oddly enough though, it almost looks sleeker than a black ipod. It just looks flat, which is kind of nice. Still, for the money I would still buy a 30gb ipod.

I've been reading about this more lately. It sounds like a pretty good alternative to the iPod if you're looking for that. Does anyone here have a gigabeat?

Flash mp3 players are what people should want.

Sansa™ e270 MP3 Player 6GB

Image

Has:

FM Radio
Can record stuff with it. (Concerts or radio)
Expansion slot for SD cards for additional memory
Liquidmetal back casing for durability and scratch resistance
Works like a flash drive, so no software needed to put music on and can easily get music off
20 hour battery life, since the flash memory doesn't have moving parts.
Plays video

I wish I had saved up to get this one.

Yeah, when Natural Mike posted that he picked this up for just over $100, I actually envied him. Once these Flash suckers get up to significant giggage, I am SO there! Of course, I haven't yet experienced any problems with my 60 GB Vidja iPod six months in, so it's not really like I'm looking for a replacement or anything.

Oh yea, and the flash players feel like a feather as compared to the ipod bricks.

I got a Gigabeat for Christmas. Not knowing whether it was any good, I read some reviews and decided I'd better try it before I decided to keep it. I'll disclaim that I was already weaned on the iPod interface, but the Gigabeat's was awkward. I don't like using just a d-pad to navigate (the "speed up scrolling the longer the button is held" paradigm makes scrolling imprecise and frustrating), and when you click the center of the pad to "select," it doesn't really feel like it's worked (and sometimes it actually doesn't work). The menu system did not seem particularly well-fitted to the physical interface.

The Philips one also had some very awkward qualities. The interface was kind of neat, but often moved too fast or too slow. The deathblow for that one, though, was that the animated menu system was SLOW when moving between screens. Poorly-designed software.

I also tried the 40gb Zen whatever, which is just way bigger than the others (but does have monstrous battery life). IMO, that menu system is not simple enough and the physical interface, which is very similar to the Philips, suffered from the same problems.

In the end, after trying almost all of the MP3 jukebox players on the market (I liked the iRiver I tried but the biggest one any store around me carried was 20gb, and the 40gb was too expensive anyway), I went back to the iPod. My 30gb has the great iPod interface and is thinner and lighter than any other similarly capable players. Anyway, the real lesson is, try them all out at the store if you can, because you'll be surprised how annoying little flaws can be.

My 2 pesos.

I got the 40gb one. It's the bomb for 199. Love it.
