There are so many songs that shamelessly rip off other songs.
But which ones do it most blatently, while still making a damn good song of it's own?!?!

The Jam - "Start" = Beatles - "Taxman"
Elastica - "Connection" = Wire - "Three Girl Rhumba"

Yet, you see in both cases the rip offs are still damn good songs in their own rights. So... what else falls into this category?
I think it would make a good mix theme: a two-disc set: Disc one: the ripoffs; Disc two: the originals

Green Day's 'Jesus of Surburbia' blatantly take from the songs 'On With the Show' by Motley Crue and 'Summer of 69' by Brian Adams.

Yeah, that "Taxman" bass line is elemental. You pick up an instrument and your fingers are drawn into that pattern.

Wasn't that Elastica song technically a sample? I know they had to give credit...

There's a great story about Gary Louris griping about Tom Petty's "Last Dance with Mary Jane" aping his Jayhawks' "Waiting for the Sun." And Rick Rubin told Gary, "Yeah, he might have stolen that, but BOTH you guys stole it from Neil Young." And Gary went like, "D'oh!"

Speaking of Petty , The Strokes' "Last Night" = "American Girl"

Oasis' Cigarettes and Alcohol and T-Rex's Bang a Gong..Obviously the former band is famous for its...homages.

My own favourite is Aerosmith ripping themselves off with latter day song 'Jaded' from their far better 'Lick and A Promise' off Rocks.

LCD Soundsystem "Never as tired as When I'm Waking Up" vs. "Dear Prudence"

There's another one in that song too, just can't remember.

Drice By Truckers:
"Marry Me" = "Take It Easy" by the Eagles

"Easy On Yourself" = "Jenny" (867-5309)

Josh Rouse-Sad Eyes

totally rips off the piano part on REM's At My Most Beautiful.

and that song is a rip off of every Beach Boys piano line.

One I'm ashamed to admit I never noticed until it was pointed out to me:

Steve Miller's "The Stake" is a total ripoff of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way."

Taxman --> Beck - New Pollution (the bassline at least).

But the most blatant rip off of all time has to be Jet's Are You Gonna Be My Girl (Iggy - lust fo life). And what's worse, is that with their shitty fanbase, no one will ever know.

Nick Lowe's got more than a few of these, but the one that jumped immediately to mind is:

"Stick It Where the Sun Don't Shine" = Creedence - "Green River"
