this article? There are a LOT of people who rank things like this ultra-high because they feel a duty to do so because their peers do so and they don't want to be left out, rather than that they think it's really worthy of that status. I never said anything negative about the album - it's an interesting album, it's a good album, but there's nothing particularly special about it, either that should warrant the kind of worship it gets. Look at the reaction many of you are giving to people who
don't react with unquestioning adoration.
to deconstruct this haq-style: so now you are saying that because of a study cited by the BBC, of which the essential finding is that 'peer pressure' also exists in musical realms, this album is overrated.
i disagree: this record has never found mainstream or wide acceptance, and although some may differ on this, i think that this album is not even that widespread in the indie community, in terms of the number of people who have heard it. why, then, has it gained the critical stature and growing acceptance that it has over these last years? because of the rabid intensity of devotion this album inspires in its followers. these rabid followers (myself included) get into this album not because of peer pressure (although that may explain why they gave it a spin in the first place), but because of deep emotional and aesthetic reaction that most seem to have to it. to imply that all these people are lying about it and this is only a classic record because of peer pressure could be interpreted as offensive to some. not me, however, i don't much care if you don't get into the record that much. just don't slag on it because there are a whole bunch of us who do.
