Same here. Drives me batty when someone emails me copy with double spaces through the whole thing.

Yes, plus a period to end the sentence.
No (see the Wikipedia article, about half-way down, just before 'Ellipsis in Japanese').
Alright, I'll take your word for it, but what I said is the rule in legal writing (and a space between each dot in ellipses). Thus, an ellipses is always three dots, and a period always ends a sentence, which makes sense to me.
Actually, Fu's Typography page says that sometimes it's okay, so I'll get off my high horse about that one. But then the author says that he doesn't do it, so I will stick with three at the end of a sentence, myself.

unless you're using css or " " html compels one space. for example, i typed like 10 spaces between these sentences.

Okay, I actually read this so I think I've earned the right to add my boring reply to 4 pages of nothing.

I was taught two spaces in high school "keyboard" class, and I've done it ever since. I'm 24.

No, he's right. Pretty much an inane exercise in pedantry.

25 years old. I use one space in informal typing (like here), and two spaces in formal writing. Was taught to use two spaces, but never think about it until I'm typing something that will be scrutinized. Haha! The 'two space' rule was often used as one of my tricks for meeting page requirements in school papers (along with changing the spacing from 2 lines to 2.2 lines).

It's right up there. It's four pages and has nothing to do with music, politics, social issues or how the board is being ruined by varying degrees of the aforementioned topics.

Concise and spot-on, DJ.

Or is that spot--on?

Wait, when did 'whining' become a desired direction for a thread to head?

While "whining" may not be optimal, it beats "you aren't using elipses correctly (x4 pages)" handily. At least whining makes for a good read, sometimes.

But...(sputters)...but...it's still whining!!!1!

The ellipsis talk was only a page or two -- most of it was whether or not to use 1 or 2 (or the less popular 1 1/2) spaces after a period, and why.

...

When you catch yourself saying "the elipses part was only a page or two," it's entirely possible that some quiet reflection may be in order.

's all I'm sayin.

WTF! four pages for one or two spaces? and argueing over ellipses?

Have you ever thought that both sides may be right?

E FU and Jewels- the arbiters of good taste and visual correctness:
You are correct that to your eyes it is/may be more visually appealing to have only one space. However, it is probably lost on those that are not trained to appreciate a line of type that has been lovingly kerned.

For those that prefer two spaces:
When designers are composing ads-the spacing between letters are treated not only as letters but also as graphic elelments. Therefore careful and close attention is paid to the "white" space not only betweenn letters and sentences but also for line breakes and in the case of multiple lines of text, the spacing between lines also. This can make the copy much easier to read and a joy to see.

Back in the old days lines of text used to be carefully spaced by a person that knew how to do it… a typesetter. Those along with typewriters have gone the way of the dinosaur.

imo.
