I think this is the first ever Black Metal 'A Tune A Day'. Image

This is a track taken from Darkthrone's upcoming album, "The Cult Is Alive". This track is also on a 4-track EP that will be released just before the album.

This is some raw, beer swilling Norse metal. Ugly, cold, and addictive. The new album is fucking amazing. Evil mixed with just the right amount of humour.

splates, i know you've got it in you. check this out.

doom / stoner seems to be gaining popularity [even among the indie crowd, which is fuckin' absurd], but black metal is still a genre to look to for extreme music. there are plenty of artists creating some grim music.

palerecorddivision: i'm into both of those bands, but IMO Darkthrone tower above them. which albums have you been listening too?

today it was:

thorns - the pagan winter
gorgoroth - slottet i det fjerne

Its the vocals often. I know, stupid reason. Thats why I like Stoner/Doom, NWOBHM, and the instrumental post rock sounding stuff (Pelican, Red Sparrowes et al). Its the slow, molasses like Black Sabbath worshipping that I like in Doom.

Check out Canvas Solaris -- instrumental. A little proggy, maybe not deathy/black enough for more hardcore metal fans, but still quite enjoyable. Still, nicely technical and certainly hard enough for me.

Oh, please tell me you checked out Shape of Despair. I realize the vocals will be a turn-off, but goddamn...sludgiest. Takes 'em like 5 minutes to utter one 6-line paragraph.

Dalen -- you like Naglfar? I tend to go for that "wall of sound" style more (God Forbid, etc.). This sounds downright Venom-esque-ly sparse in comparison. Perhaps that's leftover overproduced pop leanings.

nah, not stupid at all. vocals can kill a band for me. i personally love the vocals from Darkthrone. hideous, very ugly.

and you know i'm all over molasses metal

Naglfar are much more technical than Darkthrone, and in a different genre altogether IMO. Really talented players in that band. You're correct in the Venom comparisons. Darkthrone have that primitive sound, and Venom happen to be a huge inspiration for them.

God Forbid's last album was AMAZING. it is [IMO] one of the best produced albums in metal music history. the power and technical ability was truly captured.

But I figured I'd give this a chance. This track is doing nothing for me. Drums aren't played or recorded to well (granted I'm not listening on a stereo), and I am impermeable to that voice.

on the Too Old Too Cold EP, they cover Siouxsie & Banshees' "Love In A Void".

i'll post it if anyone's interested.

that's kinda their thing. they record in a small cottage in the middle of a forest in Norway. if it sounded polished, well played and "nice", it would not be Darkthrone. these guys are into a grim, dark sound.

Fair enough. It doesn't excuse the thin sound of the drums, though. To me, with that one listen, they didn't seem to match the grimness.

This song is ugly. It reminds me of openers at a metalfest event. You are standing there waiting to see Testament or Flotsam & Jetsam, Darkthrone comes on, not very advanced, but kicking ass like Nashville Pussy.

dis is a good one. ) Thanks D....

Speaking of metal, check this new record release date out...

"February 3, 2006

From Century Media:

"Itís Official: The release date of CELTIC FROSTís long-awaited return strike, Monotheist, has been confirmed as May 29th (Europe) / May 30th, 2006 (North America)......."

http://www.celticfrost.com/main.html

I used to love these guys before they wanked out.

'Morbid Tales' scared the shit out of me at 15.
