she likes all the things the ladies like. she's super interested in general, so she likes gifts that expose her to new things.

i am up against her last gift to me which was a 3 day seminar given by one of the premier sommeliers in the world.

previous appreciated gifts have been:

several poetry anthologies (can't go with this again)
ipod mini
opera tickets

any ideas?

Since I don't know your wife, and you haven't really offered any concrete interests ("she likes all the things the ladies like"-- what does this mean?), I can't offer too many suggestions.

What about a surprise trip to a cabin for a weekend?

alright.....how about this book collection:
(it worked out well for busty as a xmas present to his girl....)

the griffin & sabine collection.
a magical, mysterious and romantic story told via a collection of beautiful handcrafted postcards and letters that you physically take out of the envelopes to read.

or more elogquently stated:
Amazon.com
Few books are more romantic than this trilogy, nor more surreal. Griffin Moss is a rather doleful, lonesome, gaunt, and haunted postcard designer in London. Sabine Strohem is an illustrator of stamps living on an island in the South Pacific. One day Griffin gets an extraordinary letter from Sabine revealing that she knows all kinds of things about his life and work--somehow, she can share his soul from afar. They start exchanging love letters, yet it remains an open question whether Griffin and Sabine are two hearts that mystically beat as one, or simply illusory. "You're a figment of my imagination," Griffin accuses Sabine. "You cannot turn me into a phantom because you are frightened," Sabine replies. Phantom or soul mate, Sabine is pursued across the globe by Griffin in an increasingly impassioned fashion, and the mysteries deepen.
The legendarily popular trilogy of books containing the Griffin-Sabine correspondence literally contains the correspondence: postcards, front and back, and letters in envelopes pasted into the book, which the reader must open and read--a temptation few can resist. Nick Bantock's story was way ahead of the computer game Myst, with which it shares a moody allure. Bantock designed hundreds of book covers (for Philip Roth, John Updike, and others) before he fled London for a lovely island off the west coast of Canada with his rather Sabine-like artist wife and became improbably famous by dreaming up this trilogy. His artwork is gorgeous, and countless romances have been intensified by exposure to that of Griffin and Sabine. --Tim Appelo

or....just the original trilogy.... (which are the best, in my opinion...)

the trips are a good idea, but she doesn't have 2 consecutive days off for the next 4 months. i will check out those books maybe though.

things the ladies like, for those of you who pretend not to know:

clothing
perfume
shiny things

ha. fooled you.... i'm not particularly into any of those things.

a) clothing is just something i wear so that i don't get arrested for indecent exposure. (sure, i have a style i like. but i hate for other people to buy clothing for me.)

b) i don't wear perfume. oils, yes. lotions, yes. but again, i'm picky and wouldn't expect another to buy that for me unless they know i a) like it or b) want it.

c) the only jewelry i wear or want to wear is a silver ring that i wear every day and some sort of beaded or woven necklace.

i'm not your typical girl, i guess.

besides you can't get any ol girl any ol 'girl thing'. we do have tastes.

anyway, just sayin' is all.

well, that's why i said that she likes the things that ladies like. you don't like the things that ladies like (although i include oils, ointments, unctions, and salves under the 'perfume' umbrealla), which is a possibiilty allowed for implicitly in my statement.

fyi, I can't recommend on your three "lady" items because:

(a) clothing is subjective..... your wife probably has a very distinct style. Does she shop at a particular store? Can you get her a hefty gift card to said store?

(b) You better know what kind of perfume she likes, because if you don't, this is one of the worst possible gift ideas. Again, very subjective. If you know she likes a particular scent, get her a gift set, with the lotion, shower gel, etc.

(c) Jewelry, again very subjective. I'm like Daystar, will only wear silver. Has she pointed out anything in particular to you that she likes?

This is how I would phrase it if my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday:

"I need some new pants from Banana Republic. My size is xx, and here is the style number. If you can't get them for me, I'd appreciate a gift card instead.

I love Burberry Brit, and would love some more shower gel!

Remember those cool earrings we saw at Twist last weekend? Those would make a great gift idea, hint hint!"

I'm not slamming you, but you know your wife better than we do.

how about something she can do with a friend, like a manicure, or massage? (This means you have to buy a gift certificate for 2.)

How about a special night out, like to a winery, or something fun, memorable and borderline romantic?

Okay... adding something constructive:

Like dnorwood said, pampering things are nice, e.g. bath stuff from a store she likes... stuff she might feel guilty to buy for herself.

Timmyjoe's suggestion is good too; often special events are nicer than more things.

good luck

this is true, and oftentimes, I'm more impressed when my husband gets me something because he was listening to me... like this last weekend, when I complained about having to wear full shoe covers on my bike ride. Guess what I got for Valentine's Day? Toe covers. Perfect. Or how about the time I was marveling over his polarized lenses in his sunglasses? Guess what I got for Christmas? Yep, polarized lenses.

You can't go wrong with massages either. Everybody loves those.

Spa day becomes just that much more valuable (or perhaps a house call deep tissue massage) in that case. Make sure that part of the gift is that house doesn't fall apart while she takes (some of) the day off.

How about a class for her? Cooking or sushi-making?

Or, a real nice pocketbook (Just did that for my wife's bday last week & it went over real well).
