boy bands popularized it
...
britney too

it takes whatever you sing
and rounds it up or down
until it fits within the right key

it makes you sound kind of robotic
and hilarious

whats it called?
and is there a computer program that does this?

(not that i would plan on using
it in my HIT SONG)

= pitch correcter

Pitch correcters are meant to be set so you can't hear them (although I can usually hear them anyway). But if you set them in a certain way they give a voice a certain effect similar to a vocoder. the most extreme example of this being Cher.... "Do you beliiiiiiiiiiieeeeve in life after love?"

Almost every recording that's out there now, including "indie" artists, uses pitch correcters on the vocals. With commercial acts they crank it so evrything sounds smooth and perfect.

Also known as Auto Tune, Antares was the first company to do it decently well.

Really? I was not aware of this. It saddens me - I like hearing imperfect singing, that's what gives people's voices character.

What's Peter Frampton's "singing guitar" thing called?

"DO YOU FEEL...LIKE I DO?"

Actually, it's not quite as simple as a vocoder or auto-tune. Specifically, in the Cher one, it was a vocoder, with a delay on certain notes, because when they did it without the delay, they basically recreated her voice synthetically, and it sounded too accurate, and no-one knew they were doing something other than just her voice.

Well, it was cool at the time. Now that it's had the shit worn out of it, it sucks, but the first time I heard it, I thought it was cool.

That is a talk box. He places a tube that feeds the unfiltered sound of his (still distorted) guitar, and then filters it with his mouth.
