Who took it personally? By your own admission you don't know ANY on of the Drive By Trucker's output, it just "seems like a wilco a.m. knockoff."

Hardly an educated opinion.

incorrect. immediately attacking someone for giving an opinion that may not line up with yours seems like you took it a bit personally. i know their most recent album. that's it. you must have missed the part where I said "I DON'T KNOW ANY OF THEIR PREVIOUS STUFF." and yes, the most recent album, to me, sounds like a wilco knockoff. you have to understand that there are going to be people out there that might not enjoy one of your favorite bands.

Ryan, as a dude who plays music, you should be able to discern the "three guitar sonic assault" on songs like track 7.

And if you think ANY band is making songs like the last song on the album, I would LOVE you to point them out.

AND as I said, go get SRO, or Decoration Day, and you even if you don't like them you should understand that they are NOT derivative and mundane.

minus your circumventing bullshit,
what's better?

I suspect you're not really interested in the DBT's other albums, so go read some Carpenters or something. Lots of luck.

dude, how have you missed the multiple spots in this thread where he asked for suggestions from their back catalog? he's obviously interested.

I don't not like the album. it just didn't WOW me. I have heard that SRO and Decoration Day are great, so I'm all up on checking those out.

and yes, i do agree that the 3-guitar orgy on #7 is pretty cool

I'll upload some stuff for you today. As for the other fella, he seems less interested in hearing music than eliciting fevered responses.

I like DBT, but I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan. However, songs like "Puttin' People on the Moon" or "Danko/Manuel"—hell, even really like "Panties In Your Purse"—go $+®4i6#+ +ø ¥øu® 8®4iN.

Maybe they aren't creating an entirely new genre or redefining their creative vision every other album, but they also are a tad more inventive than substituting symbols for letters to resemble a seventh grader's AOL profile.

But then again, they are from the South, which is responsible for all the failings of American culture and government for the past six years. And they are dumb, even to the point of ignoring generally accepted standards of writing and grammar, simply out of laziness.

I gotta admit I've NEVER heard DBT called uninventive drivel before.

If anything, they're praised for being as real and honest and gritty as a band can ever be.

Never heard them called commercial or derivitive or bland before, either. I don't share the negative opinion, but fascinating anyway.

YEah, Its not poopoo bear vs. the ticklemonster.

It's ROCK AND FUCKIN ROLL!!

The new one is not as immediate as the last couple, but I like that about it. This is a band that has not yet hit its stride.

And if you think a double album about Lynyrd Skynyrd and "The Duality of the Southern Thang" is derivative, then you don't know the meaning of the word. And you need the brakes beat off you. And a Lobotomy

This made my day(the poo bear part). I may have to borrow this line. Hope you don't mind.

DBT's play a very traditional form of rock n roll but they do it so well. The songwriting is what separates them from the pack in my book. Dudes tell great stories that convey a lot of feeling and emotion. And they rock! That's good enough for me.

1. I simply asked for other album recommendations from the DBT because I wasn't impressed with the current album.
2. You're sitting behind a keyboard talking about music.

Your "simply" also involves effectively calling other people morons and bandwagon jumpers.

That gonna get your questions answered you think?

See them live at any opportunity. So far my only chance was on a 100 degree day in Grant Park last summer after wanting to hear them for almost two years yet missing every single show because it was scheduled on inconvenient nights, i.e. my wedding.

All I can say is that in that sweltering heat when my clothes were sticking wet to me they rocked my ass off. And I can only imagine what they sound like in a closed environment, oh lord.

I've become a big fan of theirs thanks to my husband. They're down to earth and gritty. I like that in a band. And I like Southern Rock even though some may not find it cool to do so. Well fuck em.

SRO and Dirty South are both albums that will change your mind in a hurry regarding one new song.

Go listen to them then come back here.

I fully expect a thread started by you "GET ON THE PLANE"

But listen closely to what they say. SRO will give you a good glimpse in to the psyche of maniacs like me, derris and bloor

enjoy. but if you dont like it, no probs. you really do have to get into their music lyrically to truly appreciate though so give it some time.

and killer whaler: just go get SRO, Dirty South, or Decoration Day and stop being such a whiny bitch. I wouldnt be surprised if you dont have the manhood (which im guessing you gave away for a small sum) or the brains to "get it"

what is all this shit about manhood and fags and general gayness?
it's been used as an insult multiple times today by several people.
identity crisis?
either way, it's a pretty fucking ridiculous insult regardless of sexual orientation. do you have the brains to get that?

BTW, i got southern rock opera and the dirty south.
i plan on listening to them tonight.

Listening to The Dirty South quite honestly changed the direction of my music tastes for a while. The Drive-By Truckers have this awesome southern rock style that draws from many influences (Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Band, The Allman Brothers, Creedence), but mimics none. Beyond the power of the rock itself, it is the songwriting of this band that has blown me away. These guys feel committed to telling stories about the "duality of the southern thang", the grittiness of blue-collar life, the injustice and pain on which the protagonists feed, the inherent humor in an incorrigible character. To some extent, it's like having a bunch of wooley southern rock guys channelling Flannery O'Connor, that's how literary I find their works. I haven't really felt that as much with this new album, but that may be because I am so at home inside the rest of their albums that I haven't given this one a chance to sink in yet.

Topics spanning drugs, alcohol, suicide, incest, elopement, suicide, alcohol, betrayal, Iwo Jima, JAIL, suicide, alcohol, drugs, corrupt southern sheriffs, friends dying in traffic accidents, car racing . . . and drugged alcoholic jail suicides . . .

These guys are pretty amazing, and they've worked on cultivating their sound for quite a long time before they started getting widespread attention. Multiple songwriters who do solo projects, a great ability to step out of each other's way so that whoever is singing lead sounds totally appropriate - I am a big fan of this band, which has come as a very pleasant surprise over these last few years. It's nice to be reminded that I have broad tastes, and this modern version of the music of my childhood fits like a comfortable smoking jacket. I have shared this music with my father, the man who played the allman brothers for me, steve miller band, the beatles, the byrds, the band, the nitty gritty dirt band, three dog night, creedence and so many more vinyl albums with furry-looking brits and americans standing around wearing fringed jackets and smoking what could either be joints or hand-rolled cigarettes, and to be able to share this music that reminds me of why my first phrases, shouted from the living room rug while I ran around in my diapers, were "LET'S BOOGIE!!!" and "ROCK & ROLL!!!"

And there are a couple of reasons why I like the Drive-By Truckers.

Fuck dude, that should be on their website. Very well written and coherent (especially for a up and coming monger)
