would it even be possible to keep it and use it in the future?
isn't there some type of tracking/activation that would tie it to its original owner?

I'd be tempted to keep it and try to use it for myself but I'd also be worried about Sprint tracing a lost/stolen phone back to me or something.
As a person who works for a cell phone company I can tell you that both of these are comments are true, but the former is more true than the latter.
In all likelihood if you try to activate the phone it won't work - In all likelihood the customer called and reported the phone lost/stolen. When somebody does this the customer's carrier will flag that phone's unique ESN(Electronic Serial Number) as lost/stolen. So if the customer reported it(which is almost certain) then it likely won't work.
I'm intentionally leaving out a lot of details here, as I don't want to bore you all - just advising that it likely isn't even WORTH holding onto - it is likely just a fancy looking paperweight right now.
