I know it's an old argument but humor me, I know where all the chicago born people stand on this one.

I call it soda, cause I'm not a moron.

I say soda. This fact annoyed the ever-loving shit out of my college classmates from outside 'Sconsin -- really, from outside the Milwaukee metro -- and one of my fonder memories is haranguing the hostesses of a campus radio show called "Pop not Soda" that played during junior year about how to describe carbonated beverages. One hostess was from the UP (St. Ignace, I believe) and the other was a Minnesotan (?) -- and they could not get over hearing carbonated colas and such being called "sodas". But rarely did I debate them as to the proper nomenclature. Mostly, I just ragged on them for not understanding that Britney Spears was a slag -- this was around the time of the video for "Stronger", where she did her best stripper impersonation -- and intimated that "Pop not Soda" was a far-cry from the UP-bred hostess's punk-rocker aesthetic of freshman year (she was a sophomore at the time of the show).

When I was like 14, I went with my family to Michigan to visit my stepdad's relatives and we went over one of his brothers and they asked me if I wanted some pop and it took like a minute to figure out they were saying soda. Creepy aliens.

I usually call it pop, but sometimes I say Soda. I don't know what the usual choice is in Nebraska, and I don't really care, since we butcher alot of worldly city names around here.

used to be "pop"
then i went to school in missouri and was teased mercilessly until...
it is now "soda" -- and i don't even give the term a second thought.

pop

I was of the belief that 'soda' is a predominately American saying. Like 'hoagie' instead of 'sub'.

Or 'candy bar'.

I say pop. And now that I'm living in St. Louis, sometimes I'll accidentally say 'soda' and feel ashamed of myself.
