so i've been listening almost non-stop to decoration day and the dirty south for the past week, and i've decided that they remind me of a southern rock version of the afghan whigs. is that totally ridiculous, or does anyone else hear that? especially one of the vocalists, not sure which, but right now he is singing "your daddy hates me", and i swear to God this could be greg dulli and the whigs-turned-southern-rock.

anyways.

ok, i'm listening to "when the pin hits the shell", and my statement now seems ridiculous even to me.

but that one singer...his tunes sound like dulli and the whigs dammit!

(plus i couldn't bear to look at this thread with 0 replies much longer).

jesus, i should go home now.

on to the next song, "do it yourself", and my statement has moved from ridiculous to RETARDED. greg dulli would probably kick my ass if he saw this thread.

hmmm...is it bad that i'm the only one replying to this thread?

I was gonna reply, but you keep working it on out for yrself. I was going to say I only have one Whigs album, and have never really heard the phenomenon of which you speak.

Actually, methodology-wise, I think you're right. DBT's intent is more aligned with Whigs, early R.E.M., Stan Ridgway, Drivin' 'N Cryin', Steve Earle, Triffids, even Tom Waits, than with any post-millenial Skynyrd tags. They're more interested in presenting their experiences without simplistic bluster, warts and all. Their intent seems similar to Dulli's in that they write about sordidity and damage and dysfunction, grief, displacement and fucked up people without caricature or taking sides.

At least that's what I'm hearing having only owned the album for a short time.
