So I'm heading to San Diego for work next week. I've never been there so anyone have any pointers on where to go at night? I'd like to see some bands.

I've been once and saw a great show at a little club called The Casbah.
Check to see who's playing there.

Also, if you like sushi, go to: Sushi Ota.
Well-worth searching out.

that's a haul if you're downtown SD though. Great venue though.

You'll like The Casbah. Teeny tiny club, perfect for seeing bands.

If you have any spare time, work your way up North to Lou's Record Paradise.

And if you're there on a weekend, check out Legoland. Don't miss the mini cities (I.E. hit them first). Hours of fun.

Don't know about any nightclubs, myself. Only been to Humphrey's.

EDIT: Sorry, I meant Lou's, not Joe's.

Lou's up in Encinitas is a top notch mom and pop indie store. Tons of used cds and vinyl.

Lou's rules! Separating used from new usually annoys me, but for some reason I loved that the used stuff was in a separate building - and there was a lot of it! Great selection, too. Bested only by the almighty Amoeba, of course.

2 Legoland endorsements? What is this board coming to?

You might want to check out the Che Cafe (near SDSU campus, I believe)...Circle takes the square (post-math) and Casiotone for the painfully alone (post-cute) are playing there next week...

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I love San Diego and go down there whenever I get a chance.

You can drink and have fires on the beach. Folks even roll kegs out on the beach on weekends. What's not to like. I can't see myself ever being that bored at Mission Beach, Pacific Beach or the Gaslamp Quarter. I hear they have a kick ass Mardi Gras in the Quarter too so if you're there in the first half of the week, I'd check that sh*t out. I've flirted with the idea of driving down for an evening of it and getting up super early to drive back to work. You can see shows anytime. Going to a small dive venue and seeing a band you can see at home is no way to experience a new city in my opinion.

I don't really think Lou's is worth driving up to. I go maybe twice a year. It's better than any other record store here, but with so much readily available to buy online now, it's not really worth the gas. I pray that someday an Amoeba will open here.

If you must have record stores, there is also M-Theory, which is small and okay, and seems to be trying to become the "cool" record store within city limits. And then you have Off the Record, which used to be cool maybe ten years ago. They moved to North Park, I think, but are overpriced and everything is dirty, so I don't go.

If you are a hipster, a Beauty Bar just opened up in a kind of ghetto area with really nothing else of interest around it. Never been, but I've been to the one in SF and I think this is pretty much the same thing. I think the Lamplighter is another hipster bar.

Pacific Beach has lots of bars, but has more of a fratboy atmosphere. I don't like it there. Downtown is better, has more variety in bar types. Depends what you like, I guess. If you aren't staying downtown, though, it's kind of a pain in the ass to access (read: park).

It's easy for Cali folks to be spoiled by Amoeba, but the rest of us will think we are in heaven at Lou's.

As for SD, plenty of touristy things, best weather ever for a US city, public transportation that dominates, and a new baseball stadium with a sweet impact on a shitty part of town. SD is happening

Having said that, it's the worst family town I've ever visited. Even with Lego land, Animal Park, SD zoo, and another wild life park close by, you're a lepper if you have a child and go into a restraunt in the SD area.

So, I'm interested b/c I am heading to the area to see my sis Graduate from Scripps College in May, most of the people I know from this area are in Parris Valley. So what is the distance out to here?
These people I know are all skydivers and nonetheless/or naturally waaaay cool folks.
I plan to give my lil sis a dive as a graduation present.

thoughts?

ah, san diego... haven't been down there in awhile. strangely i'm not too familar with it even though i used to go down there all the time when i was at uci.

i only know the la jolla area- but that's a college-town because of ucsd.

the beaches are great, and it's been good weather in la so i can imagine it will be even better down there.

if you want to go dancing, i think there's something called 4th&b? the casbah is definitely good for shows.

i'd avoid beauty bar. the one in la sucks. so does the one in sf.

pacific beach definitely does have the fraboy atmosphere but there's this really good taco joint down there that has fantastic food. forgot what it's called though.

If you are from MD, I'd skip 'surf and turf' and go Mexican food. SD county is king of the taco stand and there are OK expensive places e.g., Old Town Mex. Cafe (I am not that into it but R Ray went there; touristy). El Indio Shop has gone down a bit but is old style Cal-Mex. Taquitos are known as 'rolled tacos' most places. Another fun regional type place might be a surfer bar/restaurant. Hodad's is known for burgers and there's a breakfast place in Pacific Beach called Kono's which is popular. If you go fish, Point Loma Seafood is a fun but crowded place for lunch.

You can do that at any State Beach in CA.

Worked for us... used it to get from our downtown hotel out to the former baseball park for a couple of games. Also took advantage of it to get to the revitalized downtown district plus north to the old mexico type part of town district for dinner one night.

Anyway, I enjoyed SD and look forward to my next visit.

This is not true. I lived right across the street from this bar when I lived in San Francisco and would spend a lot of time there. The one in Manhattan is pretty cool as well, looks very much the same but haven't been to the one in San Diego or Los Angeles.

The people of San Diego are highly attractive but it's Southern California so that is a given.
