This happened yesterday.

I was on the train going into the city and the guy in the seat across the aisle leaned over and said "Do you like a band called Mogwai?" and I said "Yes" and he said "They are my brothers band, I remember you from the Barrowlands gig".

Now this is curious since as far as I'm aware I've never seen Mogwai at the Barrowlands, only at Mono but the point is I had a conversation with the drummer from Mogwai's brother on the train. Ha!

Of course you all probably know I was on the same unemployment scheme as Stuart Murdoch back in the mid 90's and of my John Peel connections.

I don't know if this counts, but my list of people I have conversed with more than once and while drinking at Duffy's Tavern in Lincoln includes:
Tim Kasher of Cursive and The Good Life
Jenny Lewis
Blake Sennett
Orenda Fink
The Faint, with the possible exception of their guitarist Dapose
Mike and AJ Mogis who have recorded nearly every Saddle Creek album ever
M Ward

Politically wise through years of working on campaigns and being a student:
Bob Kerrey, now President of the New School in NYC
Tom Daschle
Senator Tim Johnson of SD
Senator Ben Nelson of NE
Now retired Rep. Doug Bereuter of NE

Talking to a person directly one time or more in the same day/night either both politically and musically speaking:
Former President Gerald Ford
Bright Eyes
Former CIA Director James Woolsey

Umm, I might be DQ'ed since i work for a music mags...

but I have Gene Simmons cell phone and private home office line in my cell. Havent needed to use it in the last 3 years, but still kind of cool to have in there despite the fact....

Some other various known rockers not nearly as rich as The Demon, but would still be known here..

rachael yamagata (been friends with her since '98)
derrick carter (grew up with him and his brother)
kevin dubrow
all of the mighty blue kings (used to babysit the singer's boy)
a bunch of local chicago musicians
i've shared many a drink and meal with jon langford of the mekons

i've met dave pirner enough times that he actually remembered me when i last saw him.

if we're doing six degrees, then my friend ryan is a second cousin of william petersen (grissom on csi). my friend paris, who is a chicago singer/musician knows everyone under the sun. i once was babysitting his son when john oates called.

i once held the hand of pops staples when the staple singers opened for the mighty blue kings. he was old and confused and made me sit with him. didn't care for it back then, but i was also young and stupid and didn't realize what a legend he is/was.

casually meeting/bumping into:

mark slaughter
ted nugent
some guys from black sabbath
mighty mighty bosstones
debbie harry
elvis costello
evan dando
norman blake of teenage fanclub (i was trying to escape a homeless guy before the tf show and saw a friend across the street. i ran over and he said, "hey, jas, this is norman". i almost passed out.)
liz phair
billy corgan
better than ezra
phil from liquid soul (i always forget that he's with ls)
david lowery
my morning jacket (met them in au bon pain of all places)
billy idol
gwar
peter wolf (twice)
nick hornby
jakob dylan & the rest of the wallflowers (if i wasn't dating someone at the time, i think i could've bagged one of the band members)
rick nielson (used to hang out with two of his sons in the late 90's)

i feel like there are more, but whatever. all the people i've met have been really, really nice, except for lowery. he was a dick.

I properly know anyone famous, but the closest I got was a meeting with Douglas Trumball, Oscar-winning special effects designer of 2001, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Blade Runner. Sadly, I didn't do any research before the meeting and blew an opportunity to chat with a Hollywood type who probably has some interesting stories. So I'm only 2 degrees from Kubrick, Spielberg and Ridley Scott.

"Know"- ballerina Julie Kent (once featured in People's 50 Most Beautiful list) was my baby-sitter. She was Julie Cox then.

Met- Wilt Chamberlain, Mitch McConnell (hated KY senator), Tony LaRussa... I'm sure there are more. I can't compete with my brother though, he works on Capitol Hill and used to work for a film production company.

Travis Morrison used the urinal next to me once at the Plan. He didn't wash his hands.

Red, that's a pretty crazy list (!)

I mainly know Canadian indie rock peeps:

(in descending order of closeness)

- The Dears (the main man is an old friend & the whole band is good friends with my ex-band, our old drummer is their drummer)
- The Stars (know them through the Dears, have played a bunch of shows with them, sweet peeps)
- The High Dials (old friends of my ex-band)
- Sam Roberts (friends with my ex-band, his keyboard player used to be in my old band)
- Martha Wainwright (went to school with her & hung out)
- Emily from Metric (went to school with her--still say hi)
- Regine from Arcade Fire (went to school with her--still say hi)
- Broken Social Scene (friends with one of the members, know the others to say hi)
- Had a guy from GYBE in a class with me

If you got into six degrees with some of these people it would get crazy, but of course I'm far away from that. Other six degrees:

- I met Maestro Fresh Wes because my bf has made videos for him (heh heh).
- I met a woman who's good friends with the parents of the two guys from Blonde Redhead.
- I worked for a musician who knows John Zorn
- My brother opened for and hung out with Lady Sovereign
- I met Bjork's stylist while I was DJing once (she was a total b*tch)
- I went to the same High School as: Rufus Wainwright, Mitsou, Melissa Auf DeMauf, one of the girls from Bran Van 3000, but I didn't know any of them.

Outside of music I know:
- some of Donald Sutherland's kids (hung out in the same small town as kids)
- Ben Mulrooney (ick!)
- Bruce McDonald (filmmaker) well enough to say hi.

Zzzabout it.

That's about it.

maybe so, but i would trade my entire list for stars, bss & emily. whoa.

i met rufus & martha wainwright because my ex used to book their aunt sloan. we told rufus how to get to the nearest dance club and watched martha take two bottle of tequila from the dressing room to the tour bus. teddy thompson was there, too, and he was kind of a spoiled brat.

i also forgot that i went to high school with anna chlumsky from the movie, "my girl".

I once hung out with Layne Staley for a while at a German dept. store. He wasn't doing so hot.

Anyone I've talked with fro more than a few minutes on the "famous" tip has been via some kind of work (be that political conventions, club booking, the band, etc.), so that doesn't really count for me.

I've met a lot of famous economists!

My sister knows the rock stars for the whole family. Still she can't have meals with a Mekon for me.
