Wrong German. Nena was responsible for 99 Luftbaloons.

Wait. There's two of them? That can't be right.

Nina Hagen is the nutcase. Gabriele "Nena" Kerner is the pop singer.

I prefer Lydia Lunch.

Holy shit. All this time I thought Nina Hagen sang that song about the balloons.

From AllMusic Guide:

The most successful German-language single in the US since Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" nearly a decade before, Nena's "99 Luftballoons" is a staple of MTV-era nostalgia. Singer Nena Kerner's appealing voice is a wonder ? combined with the video, which made much of her fairly stunning looks and graceful stage presence, her warm, guttural vocals almost manage to make a song about nuclear annihilation downright sexy ? but the song's best attributes are its stomping synth-bass riff and the ironically cheerful-sounding keyboard riff that takes the place of a conventional chorus, which bears a startling resemblance to the organ riff from Freddie Cannon's "Palisades Park." An English-language remake was added to the US version of the group's debut album, but the poorly-scanning translated lyrics only revealed how naïve and silly the song's apocalyptic scenario of World War III begun by mistaking a bunch of balloons for an enemy plane really was.

Okay, I unintentionally learned something today.

I don't think I've heard a single song by her. I'm curious to hear what she sounds like now.

Actually I like how "naive and silly" the English lyrics were. They were cute. I've heard she had like 16 million German hits besides that one.

I don't own anything anymore by her, but think like equal parts Yoko Ono, Kate Bush, Lydia Lunch and Pat Benatar screeching about alien abductions.

If I remember right.

Best thing about the song was the 7 Seconds cover.

In German, you forgot "in German." I think she was considered sexy in a punk sort of way, once upon a time.

Nina Hagen used to be totally cool. Probably still is. Look for her In Ekstacy album as an example of just how good she was. And her cover of "My Way" shreds the Sid Vicious effort (and I like Sid's version). Bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs owe her a lot.

I still think she's hot...although that is the first pic I've seen of her in years.

She always had fun style. Her NunSexMonkRock is pretty good and she had a few singles over the years that got some play in clubs and stuff. I think I've still got a copy of her mid 80s album In Ekstasy around somewhere. That one has a fun version of My Way on it.
