I think the people were probably pissed because they were too cowardly to actually say anything. They recognized that you did what people SHOULD do rather than what people actually do. It reminds me of something I heard a comedian say recently:

"I don't want to live in a place with Neighborhood Watch. I wanna live in a place with Neighborhood "Do-Something-About-It".

I give you the proverbial high five. I imagine I would have stood there and done nothing and then after he left would have said to whomever I was with, "boy what a whacko". That's mainly because I am afraid of getting punched in the face.

But one question: Are you implying in your original post that the whole country is not, in fact, going to the Arabs? :)

Wow, Aaron, sorry you got punched, but I'm glad to see someone stand up for what they believe in for a change. I tend to go with the "be quiet and ignore the guy" variety, but sometimes, some things need to be said, because those attitudes are NOT okay.

Sorry to hear about this Aaron. Based on your description of the incident I would have probably done the same thing. So, thanks for taking the hit for me this time.

Next time, follow him, and call the police.

It's hard to know what to do in these kinds of situations but when I encounter them it makes me wish I were a very large man.

That said I guess even that doesn't help much either way if you're not expecting to get hit.

Sometimes I just can't keep my mouth shut in these kinds of situations...

Years ago my ex-bf (a big guy) and I were walking down the street late at night when we crossed paths with a guy and a girl. She was quickening her pace and he was following after her. You could tell they were a "couple" (whatever that means). She was telling him to leave her alone and he just saying in loud voice: "What's your f*cking problem?!?!". At one point before they approached he shove her into a storefront window. They kept walking and he kept yelling. "What's your f*cking problem?!?!"

Then just as they passed us I muttered under my breath: "What's your f*cking problem?"

Of course I learned pretty quickly that:
a) you shouldn't taunt massive, angry, coke-head dudes;
b) if you do your boyfriend is going to be the one to pay for it;
c) said massive, angry, coke-head dudes will even resort to scratching and strangling unsuspecting boyfriends, resulting in the need for an even larger monster of a club bouncer to peel them off.

Yup. I felt horrible for my bf, but we were both happy we did something about it.

Wasn't "Punched in the Face on the F Train" a Duke Ellington song?

NYC really pisses people off and I'm actually surprised anyone stopped the guy/held him back. No one saying anything afterwards and going on with THEIR life is what NYC is all about, so in a way, I'm glad to see you went against the grain and actually spoke out against his idiotic behavior.
Glad he didn't break your face. It feels good to get punched sometimes. It breaks you out of your normal routine and really gets your primitive side up in arms.

No, it really wasn't cool at all. I felt absolutely horrible about the whole thing. It was one of those totally insane situations were everything happens so quickly. The guy just lunged at him like a wild animal. My ex-bf was totally stunned; he actually ducked a punch and hit the guy pretty hard, but the guy was all coked-up and started trying to strangle him. I was actually behind the guy trying to pull him off when a bouncer from a near-by club came and helped out.

My bf wanted to stick around and make sure the girl was okay but I made him leave. Told him we should just get the police. I was so worried about him.

It was pretty much the most insane situation I've ever been in.

thats pretty messed up. i normally dont say anything - only done so a couple of times. i've actually never been punched even though i probably deserved it. most likely due to the fact that my best friend is 6'3" 350-lb ex college football player.

No doubt followed by, "You shouldn't mess with me. I'll ruin everything you are. I'll give you television. I'll give you eyes of blue. I'll give you a man who wants to rule the world."

Yeah, maybe it's the 2 noon beers I had talking, but seriously, people put up too much shit. The guy's a loud jackass, and just says or does whatever the fuck he feels like. And while that may work out great for fictional characters, it doesn't really work out so hot for people we have to share public space with.

It IS wrong to hold the damn door forever. One of the few things public transit people do right is run their immediate shit.

The driver telling him so is CORRECT.

Being called out is embarassing.

The guy is not fond of being embarrassed, so he lashes out.

The first person with any common sense and a dash of balls who tells him to shut it gets... what? Punched, then ignored by everyone else?

You did the right thing. Especially by not fighting back, not that you gave it a lot of thought I suspect.

In my haste to make the panifully obvious and unfunny "China Girl" joke in my previous post, I forgot to tell you I'm glad you're OK, A-Dub. It wasn't the most prudent course of action, but one to be applauded, nonetheless. I'm too big of a wuss to have ever said anything, despite my massive height:girth ratio.

I have the exact opposite problem... I'm so small that most people are scared to hit me, if only for fear of looking stupid. It's allowed me room to make some spectacular points in the past.

I think that in most instances, the more of a behemoth a guy is (excluding 'roids, of course), the only thing really big about him is how big of a teddy bear (READ: wuss) he is.

np: Sammy Hagar - "Three Lock Box" (just came up on random and shame compelled me to post this rarest of FT np:s)

Oh sure, but if you were to say the same offensive thing as me in a bar to some roid-o, you'd get punched, and I probably wouldn't. I don't relish it, but I do occasionally use it. I don't have many tools at my disposal.

I'm the opposite here. I'm of smaller than average height, but more often than not, I'm going to be ducking punches. Most crazy drunks literally can't wait to take a swing at me. Suffice to say I don't go out that often here in Saskatoon.

I suppose that's why I took the stance I did in response to Haq's situation. I tend to be pragmatic as opposed to an idealistic.
