With a new retail/entertainment district coming to Downtown KC, there's been rumors that we might be getting one of these places. Sounds like a great store.

My wife and I do the bulk of our shopping at TJ's.
We love it for all the reasons stated before:
(our TJ wine pick: The Nerello de Bastardo for $6.99 is a wonderful, fruity quaff and everything that Two-Buck Chuck promises but, IMO, doesn't deliver)
And because, with Ethan's food allergies, they have a nice selection of stuff there that he can have, too.

Plus, the people that work there are super-nice.

That's interesting. The one here is actually competitive, if not cheaper than the grocery stores. Then again, Giant is effectively executing a well-regulated stranglehold on the food provider market here.

I agree, we find that we get much better value for the money by shopping at Trader Joe's than we do at Dominick's or Jewel. And it's a nicer experience, too.

Plus, that Mandirin Orange Chicaken is the SHIZIT!!!

Went yesterday. Got a thing of clementinas, a bag of short-cut carrots, two frozen noodle bowls, a frozen eggplant parmesan, and a tin of peppermint bark.

One of the reasons I love Trader Joe's is that the store in Eugene was small enough that we recognized almost all of the clerks by the time we left, and they us - I even knew a few by name (Chris, Dave, and Jon spring to mind). Man, I miss shopping there - it was very helpful on our checkbook. We typically would coupon shop around town to the Albertson's and Safeway, swing by Costco and Winco for the bulk items, and then get all of our tasty goodies at Trader Joe's.

That's weird about prices being competitive elsewhere. Here on lawnguyland it's such a trendy in place to shop for JAPpy rich mother types that it defiinitely enters ripoff territory.

they don't have to compete b/c they are seen as offering a holier-than-other-grocery-store product

I'm guessing it may depend on the grocery store prices in the area. Maybe Trader Joe's prices are relatively constant, but grocery stores in affluent urban areas and suburbs are more expensive, making Trader Joe's competetive.

Nah, probably not.

I love them and I love their stuff. I like, amongst many other things (price and quality being foremost, of course), the way they change their name as appropriate -- for example, the Tirami Su is not from Trader Joe's, it's from Trader Giotto's, and the salsa is from Trader Jose's. You gotta love a corporation that still has the scents of humour.

Oh, and the Tirami Su is to die for.

Holy cow, I just tried this wine last week. Great stuff!

The two buck chuck is great for entertaining large groups (i.e. start 'em off with the good stuff, and then break out the Shaw to follow up). I found out over the weekend that a case of Charles Shaw here in Portland is $35.

I only WISH they sold the alkyhol here in Portland. No such luck. You Californians are lucky bastards sometimes!

I will also sing the praises of:
Kat's Kookies (lowfat yummy ginger snaps)
TJ's falafel mix (I also loved their hummus mix, but they discontinued it for whatever reason)
TJ's salsa (seriously some of the best bottled stuff I've ever had, and they have tons of varieties)
their friendly staff

As for pricing, I've found them to be competitive here in Portland. Expensive on some items, but compared to Whole Foods, New Seasons or Wild Oats, pretty damn cheap.

And ayah, I would totally join the hip sisters group! ;)

I haven't been there in eons. Mainly since I moved downtown. Loved the one by my old place in Lagrange.

Now I'm going there this weekend because of this thread. I need to stop being a putz and shopping at Jewel. The Jewel by us has the worst produce.

And it's the tiniest store.

Time to get some variety back into our food life. yay

Oh, they sell the beer and wine... they just don't sell spirits, like scotch, gin, etc. I should have clarified that. Hell, Portland would probably allow beer sales at a corner lemonade stand!
