You gotta outcrazy the crazies, as discussed by Eddie Murphy in Raw.

A good course of action would have been to leap forward, jab your thumb into his Adam's apple, get nose to nose with the bastard and with clenched teeth quietly state, "You touch me again you mouthbreathing cocksucker and I will fistfuck you right here in front of everyone."

Toss in a slight tic and you're golden.

That goes for NYC in general. No one cares about anyone else outside of their social circle, and sometimes not even then.

I'm not advocating trying to be some sorta badass one isn't... but sometimes doing the right thing has unpleasant consequenses.

But yeah, Fu's method probably would have defused everything.

But Haq, remind not to fuck with you next time I'm in town. You are not to be stepped to. (That was the REAL point of this thread, right, and to show that no racism against suicide bombers will be brooked around here?)

good to see you're sufficiently warned off, gar. if you so much as look at a cab driver when you come to town, i will dispense with the "shut up" posthaste.

This must be some sort of redneck humor cause...nevermind...

Anyway, I respect Aaron as a person, and he knows that, but next time I see him, he's gonna get a spanking from me for trying to act like the meatheads from Atlanta.

Aaron, you do know you getting punched in the face is the MTA's fault. If they had better security on the trains...

Whereas he gets a pat on the back from me. Maybe all that time living in Texas and Colorado skewed me more than I'd like to admit. :)

I got punched in the face on the train for looking like a dweeb or something. I never got around to asking the guy why he did it.

If I was in this situation, I probably would've taken a pic of the dude with my cameraphone, downloaded it to my laptop, photoshopped his face onto Saddam's body and then show it to the rest of the passengers.

I can't recall the last time I got in a fight/hit.

About 35 years old, 6 feet, 250 lbs., black mustache with a touch of gray, baseball cap, dark green down jacket (Marmot brand) with the furry collar. Latin in appearance, maybe Dominican. Sounds Brooklynese. Got off at the Bergen F stop at about 8:45 AM.

Sorry to hear about this Haq.

You gotta love that F train! what stop were you at when all this happened anyway? I used to live on the edge of Bed Sty and at that stop you don't so much as look at anybody or you could get your ass kicked.

Hope you are OK.

But there's a time and place for that. I would never tell someone to shut up on the subway. Another place, perhaps. But the NYC Subway is not the place to police anyone who's unruly or saying things you don't like. You'll get hurt real fast by doing that.

see. this is ridiculous. the very fact that you are more likely to "get hurt really fast" on public transportation that most likely is FILLED with people and bystanders who can step in is a really sad statement, not just on NYC subways, but on the human race. Is there a line that is crossed when on the subway? When is it best to step in and not worry about the fear of getting hurt? So, if the consequence for correcting an assbag for ranting about Arabs because he got called out for screwing up the efficiency of the subway system is not worth it--logically, you should then not only avoid noticing a man beating a woman in the same car as you, you should move to a different car so as to completely avoid seeing it at all.

Although one needs to be cautious, there are certain things that should outweigh the fear of getting hurt. What Aaron did is like an extension of the idea of the "good samaritan". It's a moral obligation to help out your fellow human--even if that human is specifically a race of people being wrongfully blamed for something that is completely unrelated.

I applaud those that actually step in. Especially in moments of physical abuse--whether it is a slap or a punch or a stab or a shot. It takes courage. Something that it appears a lot of people in this country/world (INCLUDING ME) are lacking.

Frankly, using the excuse that, "you can get hurt really quickly" is just a way to say that one doesn't really care enough about what is being said or done to have any desire to step in.

Let's just be honest and say that apathy and indifference is the real reason why the fear of pain, hospitalization, and possibly even death depending on the severity of the situation becomes the most significant factor causing stagnance.

I think, in Haq's situation, 'good samaritan' is a bit of a stretch.

Notice that I did say, "extension of"...

Also, if it is such a stretch, why then are the multiple "similar" stories given about stepping in when a woman is being verbally or physically abused(which I would deem as good samaritan)?

Me putting a label to it isn't that much different than the fact that people applied his story to theirs about stepping in when someone was in need of it.

I meant that there really wasn't anyone's life or safety being put in danger. The train was being held up a bit by some nut.
