Since there are going to be 20+ mixes involved, why don't all of us who are participating agree to rank our Top 5 favorite mixes, once we've had a chance to listen to all of them? That way, even if not everyone puts forth the effort of reviewing each mix track by track, we'll at least have some sort of barometer as to which ones were liked the best.

What say ye, mix compadres?

I'll do it if everyone's game but a couple of comments first:

I don't think this should let peeps off the hook for track by track reviews even if they are really short (dig it/don't dig it) type responses.

I've got thick skin and don't really care if mines not everyone's favorite. I really wasn't anticipating that this would evolve into a contest though and am not sure that's what everyone will want.

heh, at this rate, I should be done reviewing obner mixes by August 15, 2006. It's hard for me to rate track by track unless I've fully absorbed it, which requires repeated listenings. I've got 3 mixes already, and then a local friend gave me 4 of his own mix cd's (unrelated to this). About the only time I have to totally focus on the music, is when I'm driving.

As for top 5, I guess I'm okay with that (already knows mine won't be in the top 5). ;) But like billy g said, we're encouraging people to do this; we don't want to discourage them by rating who's is best.

edit: of course, now that I've read over my post, it makes me sound like one of those new millennium "everybody's a winner!" people.

i'm not very good with reviews, so you can definitely expect something similar to a "i liked it" or "i didn't like it" review. i'm not trying to be a jerk about it, or be lazy, i'm just not articulate when it comes to describing things.

i have 15 songs on every mix. i don't really expect a separate review for each song.

instead of saying, "_____ has the best mix", why not just say, "_____'s mix is my favorite"? no hard feelings. your mix might be show tunes and all i really like is reggae. doesn't make it bad, just not something i like.

(i really feel like i'm in grade school... "does he like me like me? or just like me? 'cause if it's just like me, i'm gonna die.")

I'm gonna try to review every mix song by song. Each song probably won't get more than a couple sentences/sentence fragments of free form thought but I'm shooting to do that for each.

We used to do that all the time, but somehow got out of the habit. I realize with 20 mixes its going to be hard to find the time to really write detailed reviews but I'd encourage people to do a review song by song even if each song only gets a 2 word response (eg like it or no likey).

I'm with Billy. I'll make every effort to put together a review for every mix I get.

Yeh, if you take the time to listen to the mix there shouldn't be all that much trouble in jotting down some kind of response. You shouldn't feel any need to describe the music - just articulate your thoughts on the music - and if you have NO thoughts about a particular song, then that is, in itself, a fairly comprehensive critical response.

(and to the Obnerers I owe reviews to: they's coming)

well, hey, if i can do a like/no like response, i'm all for reviewing song by song.

i read this:

Quote:
I don't think this should let peeps off the hook for track by track reviews even if they are really short (dig it/don't dig it) type responses.

as "no really short reviews allowed".

i guess reading isn't my strong point either.

I agree with the mix by mix. I think the song by song idea is a little optimistic. I mean, I'm still trying to get my mixes off the drawing board (I know sorry--Billy G I promise you'll get yrs first though).

Yeah, I was actually going to ask that when people started sending them out. How much you'll are paying roughly per cd sent. Also, is everyone putting them in cases, or just putting them in a padded envelope?

I'll probably put mine in cases and from prior experience, it costs me about $.83 per CD with a slim jewel case.

Let's see, I spent around $16 on jewel cases/mailers, and spent around $30 mailing (4 of them were non-domestic-- two Canucks, some lucky fucker in Belize and the lone military guy... ;)).

You do know that postage went up Jan 8th, right? :P

I'll just let the masses sort this out.
I really need to get on finishing my mix, I have until midnight, right?

I guess we should post them in the mix forum and just title the thread soreal's mix and then everyone can post their reviews in that thread.

Oh yeh. That's in the works. Also a Billzebub Xmas mix and a mix by Paper.

And I always meant to do a review of Billy G's awesome 2-disc mix, but the sheer amount of songs was overwhelming. Still, maybe one day.
