My institute over here in Aix gets a free movie ticket every week to the local cinemas. Faced with a few choices:

Good Night & Good Luck
Le Secret de Brokeback Mountain
Munich
Syriana
De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté

the last one is a french film that won 8 césars (french oscars) including best film. honestly, i'm leaning toward brokeback. i've got way too many gay friends that talk about this all the time for me to have not seen it. any suggestions?

Haven't seen any. I'd probably see Brokeback or GN&GL, though.

i will also say that, judging by your list there, you either don't have much free time or movies are not a high priority for you. that being the case, just go see brokeback so you know what the hell everyone is talking about.

i'm going based on what is available on the meager offerings of the cinema of aix-en-provence, france. the american films i listed are the only ones shown in english here. do you mean that the list isn't very impressive in terms of cinematic scope, or that they are all very mainstream, or what?

See the French flick or Good Night & Good Luck

Syriana is really meh, haven't seen Munich (yet) no interest in the others.

i'm disappointed to hear meh things about syriana from a lot of sources. (not surprisingly) the french press talked it up big time. for some reason i don't feel like good night and good luck but i'm getting the feeling more and more like that's probably the best film of the bunch. basically, i guess it's down to

goodnightandgoodluck
french flick
brokeback

I thought Brokeback and GNGL were both great. Both beautifully shot and it'll be between them for the Best Cinematography Oscar.

Syriana, while I appreciate it's intent, wasn't exactly the most entertaining flick.

GNGL was really good and it's no accident that many parallels can be drawn between what happens in the movie to today's current political climate. Recommended.

I find it hilarious that over there they call it "The Secret of Brokeback Mountain"... heh heh.

Good night and good luck is a great movie.

I really liked Syriana, but thought it didn't provide any new information or insight the way some reviewers claimed. Thought it was a very good fim, just not "incendiary" as billed.

chuis ici pour étudier la langue française. je fais un stage aussi dans un lycée ou je donne des cours d'anglais trois fois par semaine. c'est seulement pour cinq mois (pas suffisant pour moi :j'aime trop la france), mais c'est absolument génial.

where in france you gonna be?

edit/internet access is closing down, probably won't be back around these parts til monday at least. thanks for the suggestions all. i'll let you know what i decided on.

i ended up seeing syriana due to not realizing what time it was until too late. i enjoyed it but it was a bit too disjointed. tried too much to be just like traffic but didn't have as many compelling stories as traffic, so when they tried to pull all the strands together at the end it just didn't have as much impact.
seeing capote and brokeback are still high prorities of mine and i guess i should do good night and good luck even though i don't feel quite as motivated for that.

I think French Oscars would prevent me from seeing a movie.
