Are you saying this as a neophyte, or is this reaffirmation?

Both.
I just bought Before and After Science and heard it for the first time.
But have several other albums that I love.

I'm curious too. And I'm assuming, given your tastes, Todd, that this is in reference to his pop albums, right?

But I do agree. I go through phases where I just can't bear to hear him for some reason, and then suddenly I put on Another Green World and just sit in awe. How did this guy do all this 30 years ago? It doesn't sound shocking in light of music today, but thinking back to what else was going on in pop music 30 years ago, this stuff is way, WAY ahead of its time. And it's still great, great music. I just turned a coworker onto those four albums, actually. I felt a little proud of that - I haven't gotten through to her with very much of my music, but she took to this right away. Cool!

Also, if you haven't checked it out already, grab his album with John Cale, Wrong Way Up. And get the recent remaster, which has two bonus tracks. If you like Eno's 70s pop, I can't see how you wouldn't love this, too.

I just got a copy of Eno's book, A Year With Swollen Apendices. Anxious to finish my GBV book and get into this one.

I already have Wrong Way Up and love it. (But not the remaster.)
And I've been trying to track down Swollen Apendices for a while now.

And yeah, I have none of the ambient stuff, although I'm thinking it might be time to take that plunge.

I need to get a copy of Before and After Science.

I've got Music for Airports (the remaster) in my yourmusic queue. Looking forward to finally getting that.

Both sides of Eno, ambient and pop, are pretty great.

I should say I "picked it up" on half.com for $10, which seemed to be the lowest price I could find. I doubt it'll be something I need to read again, so if'n yer interested, I'll pass it on to you when I'm done.

Hey, now there's an idea . . . let the Great Obner Book Exchange begin!

My favorite of his pop albums is easily Before and After Science. It's basically the precursor to Remain in Light.

Also, not many people talk about it, but Drawn from Life is probably one of his most underrated albums. I didn't appreciate it when it first came out, but it really grows on you with age.

Eno's ambient and pop are equally great, but somehow mutually exclusive I find. I find his work with Talking Heads to be have more contiguities with his ambient work that his own pop stuff.

"Discreet Music" is awesome, you should check that out. "Ambient 4: On Land" is great too. I think I have a bunch of installation pieces of his that are less astounding.

I wrote a semiological analysis of Eno's music, also delving into the minimalist movement from which his ambient work was birthed. Anyone interested in reading it? I'm proud of it.

just went on an eno listening binge, especially Discreet Music. Another Green World is definitely one of my all time favorites and the pop stuff just never gets old to me. chiming in late here, but i just couldn't pass up a chance to participate in a mock thread and give eno props
