No kidding. The dude's been hit with hard times lately by declining sales and popularity though...

this is true. Grover was the original adorable muppet, albeit slightly neurotic and most likely, closeted.

I got that book as a present from a friend for Christmas maybe three years ago. I had mentioned to her how it was my favorite book as a kid but I didn't have it anymore, so she found it at Wal-Mart for me.

Also, I'm all about the Elmo hate. He ruined Sesame Street. I read a really good site before detailing all the reasons why.

The main one was, prior to him, Sesame Street was about teaching kids to learn and grow up and stuff like that. By introducing Elmo, a character who acts and speaks like a baby, it's like telling the children that it's okay to go on acting like you're two years old forever and you never have to grow up.

This is the best Grover - related link on the internet, bar none:

http://www.zeroboutique.com/grover/

"To some, Grover's upbringing sounds romantic and exciting. But to a young Grovski Carbunkle, born in a dingy flat in Queens on October 14th, 1955, it was anything but. Grover's father was a tyrant who was seldom at home to care for him and his brood of 9 brothers and sisters, and when his dad was home he made life very difficult for the whole family. "My father was a very unhappy person," remarked Grover in a moment of candor during a 1976 interview. "And he resented my cuteness." But instead of allowing his circumstances to overcome him, Grover quit kindergarten and went out to work to win the money his family needed and which his father invariably spent on prostitutes. For several years he worked as a shoeshine monster in Manhattan. It was during this time that he first got the performing bug into his veins. ......... "

Is Grover "true school" and Elmo's just a poser?

"From the start, it was Ernie. I can say this now since I do not have to work with the guy anymore, but Bert always was a big old sourpuss. Nothing is ever good enough for him unless it somehow involves pigeons or bottlecaps."

"But what Grover & the rest of the "Street" players couldn't have seen coming was that Kermit was going to get an all-new cast for the show: all-new, that is, except for himself, who would be the star and host. "It hurt," says Grover. "It hurt a lot. Hell, it still hurts. We had all proved out mettle and here was that high-and-mighty frog deciding none of us were good enough for his new little project. I had to read the cast list for 'The Muppet Show' 3 times before I could believe it." "
