I'm actually listening to the most underrated song from that entire album right now: "Lay Low."

That's definitely my jam from the album

I like DCFC, but both "live" performances I've seen of them (SNL and ACL) do not show Ben Gibbard in a flattering light as a frontman. I've never heard a weaker (not bad, just un-strong) voice onstage, yet he always manages to sound great on their albums. Does Dudley need his puffer, or something? Maybe they should Alan Parsons it and be strictly a studio band, to save any further embarassment.

Lay Low is the best song on the record by a country mile

It's a good album, especially "It Beats 4 U." The only song I don't care for much is "Off the Record."

I like 'em all, except for "Blended Babies and Flaming Felines," or whatever the hell that abomination of a song is called.

Auto-tune is your friend (if you can't sing)

Sometimes I think "Gideon" could've been a U2 song. And I mean that as a compliment.

As much as I dig ALL their records I still feel 'At Dawn" (and the accompanying demos) to be the most cohesive of all the proper releases.
Some great tracks on that one.
They played Amoeba SF about 5 years ago and were so good you couldn't help feeling they were destined for something great.

"At Dawn" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Tennessee Fire" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Everything else

I don't dislike Z or It Still Moves but they really pale in comparison to At Dawn for me. I think if MMJ broke up, I'd probably trade in everything but "At Dawn". That's the one I always return to. I really just own the others to know the songs for live shows, and they really are pretty terrific live.

Absolutely right.

However, I think Gibbard's actual ability to sing in-tune isn't the problem. He just doesn't have a very powerful voice in the register he uses. I can sing the low notes fairly well, but I end up sounding very...quiet, because I'm much louder in a higher, more mac macaughan-friendly register.

Also, this isn't a problem MMJ will probably ever have. Fuckin' rockstars.

few things

i didnt think the DCFC performance on acl was that bad. however watching the jacket next makes one realize these bands are not even in the same league.

at dawn is an awesome awesome album.
