Saw it with my family last night and thought it was pretty solid. It's definitely sticking to the same formula as Anderson's past two movies, but tweaking it ever so slightly. Sometimes, the dialogue seemed a little forced and pretentious, but the plot was interesting enough despite the somewhat long running time (nearly 2 hours). Definitely recommended if you like Wes Anderson.

I could watch Bill Murray eat a carrot for 2 hours and still be satisfied by his performance.

How was Owen Wilson? Does he have a huge role in it?

I'm looking forward to seeing this, although I hope Murray does more than munch on a carrot...am I the only one that thought that Lost In Translation was just sort of meh? I never understood what was so great about this film.

any movie that begins w/ Scarlett Johansson's ass in sheer panties, is immediately a classic.

as a whole i loved Lost in Translation, aside from the panties.

Just got back from seeing it. Bill Murray is great, but Owen is pretty bad - terrible attempt at an accent. And the movie, overall, not so great. I was dissipointed in aspects of the film I don't want to ruin for anyone here.

Eh, it disappointed me a little bit. But Wes Anderson movies get better with subsequent viewings.

i was disappointed too. i thought that the characters were all interesting, but that it just didn't develop very well by the end.

although, i do think that the usage of music was brilliant. seu jorge's rough translations were wonderful. "the way i feel inside" soundtracking the burial at sea was also great. and sigur ros was well-placed too.

i saw it last week and have thought it over a little and talked to friends about it. we all pretty much agree on a few different aspects. i'd probably rank it behind rushmore and the royal tenenbaums, but ahead of bottle rocket now.

Willem Dafoe is a showstopper though.

And yeah, the Porteguese renditions of Bowie songs were totally awesome.

this is the kind of movie i would really want to enjoy, i just couldn't get into it.

everything about it seemed 1000x times hollower than any of anderson's previous films. the character development was empty, some of the performances were big letdowns (particularly owen wilson). this movie just didn't have the impact of a rushmore or royal tenenbaums. it was probably the most meaningless of his films.

This movie was a total piece of shit. Completely worthless. Don't even bother to rent it. There is no plot, no story, and it's not even funny. It'd be okay if there were no plot if it was at least funny.

I'm tired of Wes Anderson. Hipsters and pseudo-hipsters all want to suck his dick, and I don't know why. I really like Rushmore, but the Royal Tennenbaums was pretentious crap and Bottle Rocket I can't remember because it's been too long since I've seen it. This movie, though, is pushing Wes in the direction of "one-hit wonder" in my book.

No, dude. I really despised this movie. Maybe it's because I rarely go see anything in theaters anymore, so I can't compare it to the likes of Spanglish or Blade: Trinity. Maybe it's also because I expected more from Murray/Anderson. To me, the movie was just almost two hours of circle jerking amongst Anderson et al--an excuse for them to fuck around in Italy for a couple months. I really didn't get a single thing out of it. Not one character was sympathetic. And, like I said, it wasn't even funny.

I put this movie behind Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums and probably Bottle Rocket but still thought it was really good. I love Bill Murray in just about anything so that helps I guess.

Certainly laughed quite a bit and sympothized with Murray's character some. It's definitely better than 90% of the movies that I saw this year.

No Luke, just Owen. And if you generally don't like Owen, you will hate him here. I LIKE Owen, and I thought he was pretty bad. Terrible attempt at an accent.

It was funny.

I like spending 2 hours in Wes Anderson land, even if I don't care about any of the characters. I love the visuals, the sets, and the ridiculous dialogue. I haven't seen Bottle Rocket in ages, but I'm pretty sure this was better. Of course, it's no Royal Tenenbaums or Rushmore.

I haven't seen Blade: Trinity or Spanglish, either, but I can compare this to Napoleon Dynamite, which fucking pales in comparison. I watched both movies for the first time pretty much back to back, Life Aquatic first and then ND. That movie was just like taking Bill from Freaks and Geeks and putting into a half-assed Wes Anderson/ 80s high school movie. Pretty much every 80s high school movie I've ever seen was better.

very little happens in this movie, and what does happen has little to do with the events preceeding or following it. it's a pleasant enough experience for the sets alone, but the horrible acting and errant plot make this movie seem a lot more slapdash than you'd expect, like anderson had a loose idea of a couple of things that he'd like to do in the flick and then arranged them to create some kind of story, rather than have the story dictate the events. then it looks like he let baumbauch punch up the dialog to lend it some replayability.

i really don't see how napoleon dynamite feels like an anderson rip-off. it looks to me like people get as far as seeing that it and rushmore both take place in a highschool, and that's good enough.

You know, I couldn't pinpoint exactly what of Wes Anderson I saw in Napoleon Dynamite (which I didn't call a rip-off, btw), but there were definitely elements of him in there. It seemed really obvious to me at the time, especially just having watched Life Aquatic. There's certainly a lot more to it than what you're saying.

The main issue I had with it was just how overly deliberate it was with everything without ever managing to be the least bit artful. The acting, just like acting in Anderson's films, was stiff and dry yet cartoonishly exaggerated. Somehow it just didn't manage any of the same charm in the process. The jokes were just a lot weaker. "Liger". Yeah.
