Red - Mix #1

1. Maximo Park - A Year of Doubt. First I've heard of these guys, I think. Not bad. 3/5
2. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #2 (Laika). Played as it is (for me), this song is still one of their best. This kinda sounds like a different mix of the song or something. Is it? 4/5
3. Film School - 11:11. So this is Film School. Sounds like Interpol with a stronger dose of PiL thrown in (at least with the bassline at the beginning). Don't really like the vocals, but the band makes it enjoyable. 3/5
4. Certain Distant Suns - Play. Eh. Got that mid-90s alterna-pop thing going. 2/5
5. Teenage Fanclub - Star Sign. Sounds like that other Teenage Fanclub song I have. 2/5
6. Tegan & Sara - Speak Sign. First time hearing T&S. Not my sorta thing. 2/5
7. The Bon Mots - Ghetto Falsetto. Hm. Nothing grabs me here. 2/5
8. Yo La Tengo - From a Motel 6. These guys do it right. Painful is such a great album. 4/5
9. Elephant - Love. Nah. A little too melodramatic or something. I dunno. 2/5
10. New Order - Temptation. I should really listen to more New Order. This is one of the only songs of theirs that I know, thanks to the Trainspotting Soundtrack. 4/5
11. Juliana Hatfield Trio - Spin the Bottle. This songs seems familiar. Was it in some movie (like a teen movie or something)? It's OK. 3/5
12. Portastatic - Through With People. Saw these guys live once and they bored me to tears. This is the second one of their songs that I've heard on an Obner mix, and so far their studio work is having the same effect on me. 2/5
13. Harvey Danger - Cream & Bastards Rise. Some friends of mine were telling me how much they used to like Harvey Danger and how they'd done some really good stuff outside of that one big hit they had. This one just seems kinda whiny, though, and pretty boring musically. 2/5
14. Okkervil River - Black. I was kinda disappointed in Black Sheep Boy, but this and "For Real" are pretty good songs. More so the latter. 3/5
15. Devotchka - We're Leaving. Not bad. Almost like a cross between The Decemberists and Calexico or something with Buckley-esque vocals. 3/5

Overall:
Flow - 4/5. Nice. I didn't care for some of the songs, but there were no serious lulls. Also I like that you didn't feel obligated to try and fill up the full 80 min. CD. It's nice when a mix knows when to cut out.
Surprises - 1/5. Nothing much new to me here that I really want to look into although those Maximo Park and Film School songs are decent.
Song Quality - 3/5

Final Score 3/5

Laika came straight from Funeral. no remix here.

i don't like that portastatic song either. i listened to it after reading your entry about the song and thought, "what the hell was i thinking?" oh well.

Nobody includes Juliana Hatfield on a mix. What is this?

1. Maximo Park - A Year of Doubt
This is the second Maximo Park song I’ve heard and although decent, it’s not doing much for me. It’s still a nice beginning to the mix.
OPA! RATING: 5.0 (…out of 10)

2. The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #2 (Laika)
Not one of my favorite Arcade Fire songs but still soooo much better than other bands who attempt this sort of thing. Nice.
OPA! RATING: 7.0

3. Film School - 11:11
Whoa, I really like this. The beginning grabs me immediately and the ending literally makes me cream my pants. Nice mix so far.
OPA! RATING: 7.0

4. Certain Distant Suns - Play
A little bit of a momentum killer. I suppose it’s decent but it’s not really doing much for me.
OPA! RATING: 4.0

5. Teenage Fanclub - Star Sign
How can anyone bash this band? Surely not me. Not one of my favorites but very good nonetheless.
OPA! RATING: 6.0

6. Tegan & Sara - Speak Sign
OK, this is not very good. The vocals are a bit annoying.
OPA! RATING: 3.0

7. The Bon Mots - Ghetto Falsetto
Not quite there. It’s alright but nothing that’s going to make me run out and buy it.
OPA! RATING: 5.0

8. Yo La Tengo - From a Motel 6
Ahhhh, you can always count on YLT. I like it a lot.
OPA! RATING: 6.5

9. Elefant - Love
There’s something about this band that frustrates me. It seems as if they have all the potential in the world, yet don’t deliver. And this song is a perfect example.
OPA! RATING: 5.0

10. New Order - Temptation
Decent New Order song but I’ve heard much better from them. It’s still rather good.
OPA! RATING: 5.5

11. Juliana Hatfield Trio - Spin the Bottle
Ahhh, the lovely Ms. Hatfield. She’s such a dirty little whore, and I love it. Very good song. It brings back very good memories.
OPA! RATING: 6.0

12. Portastatic - Through With People
This would sound right at home on the O.C. soundtrack, and I don’t quite know how to feel about that. Decent I suppose.
OPA! RATING: 5.0

13. Harvey Danger - Cream & Bastards Rise
So this is Harvey Danger? The only other song I’ve heard from them was the one on the Disturbing Behavior soundtrack. Not bad I suppose. But not too memorable either.
OPA! RATING: 5.0

14. Okkervil River - Black
Once again, I can’t stand this band. They are soooo overhyped, but I’ve mentioned that before. Moving on…
OPA! RATING: 5.0

15. Devotchka - We're Leaving
This is by far my favorite song on the mix. I love love love it. It sounds like Morrissey fronting a mariachi band. Excellent.
OPA! RATING: 8.5

What I like about this mix is that there aren’t too many songs that I hated or cringed when listening to them. Very solid mix from beginning to end with no obvious lulls.

It was very enjoyable and can see myself putting this one on someday soon.

Thanks Red.

OPA! RATING: 5.57 (…out of 10)

thanks, man. i knew someone would eventually listen to a mix of mine.

that devotchka song comes from the album how it ends. fabulous album, but it takes some time to really get into it. if you get the album, make sure to listen to it on headphones. it's phenomenal.
