Now, I did not see the whole show, but what I did... I thought he was excellent.
Understated and cutting while still being respectful.

Favorite line:
"For those of you keeping score: 3-6 Mafia: 1 Oscar; Martin Scorsese: zero."

Anyone else have thoughts?

Yes, that wuote was awesome. I thought Stewart did very well, but I enjoy his particular shtick,. that "Seinfeld with an attitude" stuff that he does. I also laughed out loud at the various 'campaign' ads that were scattered throughout. Overall, an enjoyable time,.

I thought he was great too, he took some jabs at people, but was also very modest and self-depracating at times. He also made fun of the montages, which to me are some of the most pointless parts of the show. The only people who deserve a montage are those who died and whoever wins the Lifetime achievement award.
I read some reviews today where they thought he was boring and the show was more boring than in the past. I thought they were doing a good job of handing out awards left and right there pretty fast and started to stall about 10pm.
I went to bed, so I didn't catch the end, but overall I thought he was well suited for it. His joke about the Jewish trilogy toward Spielberg and the Democratic party jokes were great. They were ten times more funny than any of that Bruce Vilanch/Whoopi Goldberg crap.

He was about the same, funny but nothing truly memorable. He was no better or worse than Chris Rock or Steve Martin.

Not a big fan of Billy Crystal as an Oscar Host.

My favorite line was how Clooney ends all his dates with "Good Night, and Good Luck."

The Colbert-narrated "smear campaign ads" were fun.

Overall, I thought he was good, but not great. I just read that Ebert & Roepert (sp?) gave him two thumbs up and compared his hosting with Carson's. I don't remember any of the Carson-hosted shows, but that sounds like a pretty good compliment.

The Bjork / Dick Cheney line was the best of the night.

I thought he did fine...it's pretty hard to come up with enough killer material to get thru 3.5 hours in a couple of weeks.

Those fake ads were really, really funny.

he did good, but i was bored with his delivery at times.

and definitely no crystal-hosted show. his opening movie parodies were always hilarious and in-between-award banter as good or better than what stewart brought.

but again, boy done good.

It seemed that way at first, but I think he found a groove 1/3 of the way into the show. His quips and adlibs were pretty great and spot-on most of the time. How can you deny his "montage about montages" comment or his reaction to Three 6 Mafia? He had several more moments just as good.

i mean, i will freely admit that i have no real basis of comparison, as i don't watch the oscars really. vut i tuned in because of jon stewart and i was severely disappointed. i didn't think he was funny at all. and to say that he was the same as on his show is crazy.

the oscars are a cultural touchstone watched by a much wider audience than the daily show is. he was so safe it was embarassing. he joked only about easy, agreeable political topics. cheany shootings and smear ads are 100% safe, and even his iraq joke in the middle isn't exactly ruffling feathers when people agree by 2 to 1 that the iraq war is a disaster.

there are serious issues right now that people disagree on that will shape our lives for a long time to come. wiretapping, torture, abortion rights. where are the jokes about those sensitive topics?

look, i watched this guy on crossfire and i watched him last night. he is a different animal when he doesn't give a shit about being invited back for a paycheck.

the effort to be gentle and appeal to everyone was incredibly offputting, and i wouldn't have that guy emcee a bar mitzvah after what i saw last night.

more than anything, he just wasn't that funny.

oh i will also point out that the only time he loosened up was to patronize some rappers after an embarrassing oscar minstrel show.

I mean seriously, did you really expect him to spit out some off color jokes about abortion and wiretapping?

It's the OSCARS. Not the Daily Show. It's network, not cable. It's always safe and it's always either so-so or garbage. That's just the way it is. To expect ANYTHING else is just setting yourself up for dissapointment.

He acted a certain way on Crossfire and acted a totally different way as the host of the Oscars, totally. But what did you want him to do, call someone a dick as he introduced them?

Imagine being back in high school again. Remember the die-hard drama students? They were idiots.

Now imagine being in front of hundreds of them and having to make them laugh. Then imagine that your shit is gonna be heard by MILLIONS of people all over the world.

I'm not sure how "loose" I'd be either.

I mean I'm not sucking the guys cock here, I'm just sayin'. Give the guy a break.

Oh, and anyone that would choose Billy Crystal over him needs a severe case of cancer.

I loved that line...

And when he said, do you think if we all got together and pulled down this giant oscar statue, Democracy would break out in Kodak Theatre?

hahahahhhahahah!!

I agree that those are serious issues that must be addressed, but I don't know if the Oscars ceremony is the appropriate forum for jokes about abortion rights. That said, I only saw a small portion of the show and liked the job he did, although I don't think he was as good as on the Daily Show.

I expected the show to be pretty boring like all awards shows, but he made it pretty darn funny. Senor Six and I were laughing out loud at some of the stuff he said. But then again we big fans of his anyway.

He was stiff in the beginning, but loosened up halfway through. I still found his jokes humorous, but his audience didn't seem to. I actually think Spielberg visibly bristled when Jon made his joke about Schindler's List/Munich- "Is it going to be trilogy? I can't wait to see what happens to the Jews next!" Not that I have anything against Spielberg or his movies, but this is Hollywood, and God knows those people don't need any more accolades than they already give themselves monetarily.

I was pissed they changed the words to "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp."

Agreed. Was he expecting a summit on world issues to break out at the Oscars? Gimme a break.

I saw that too, so I was surprised when I read that Spielberg said this:
Quote:
That impression ran contrary to the glowing assessment delivered after the show by filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who was in the audience and said he thought Stewart "did a fantastic job."
