i'm being interviewed for a freelance gig radio show thingy on thursday -- its essentially about music in the digital age, a kinda a pop/indie music countdown on the internets. anyhooter, they asked me to come in with the 10 tracks i believe everybody in the world should own/download.

i've got a few tracks down in my head... wwjpd? (john peel)

what are the most essential tracks for indie pop rock listeners to own? keep in mind, this can be everything from mariah to bill monroe to wire.

VU -- White Light White Heat or Heroin (only for the 'indies', I'd rather hear Head Up High)

Stones -- Connection or maybe Rocks Off -- one is nice a poppy, the other is nice and Jail-y.

I would use "Pablo Picasso" for this crowd, on the off chance one of the hipper types remember the cover from the Repo Man soundtrack.

Kinks - Waterloo Sunset (not because I like the tune, but because everyone else seems to consider this their signature track)

both. underground music that now is the mainstream, stuff that could be mainstream if only they were more pop, oldies but goodies, independent artists that shun the mainstream limelight but succeed nonetheless as a legitimate professional band...

this can include electronica, hip-hop, etc. i don't know really what to expect.

oh totally, but I wouldn't really think that a pop song, in any sense of the word. I think my definition of "pop" precludes me from lots of this stuff, because it's such a pain in the ass to subscribe definition to.
