What an asshole.[/img]

It is shocking how engrained racism is in our older generations, and it's a testament to how much progress we've made as a society/culture/what-have-you that at least we can recognize it and are generally disgusted by it.

When I would speak with my grandpgarents and their contemporaries, they would invariably make comments/observations that I would classify as racist. This doesn't mean to imply that said comments were derogatory--it illustrates that until not very long ago, we were raised in a society in which basing personal judgements on an individual's race/ethnicity was acceptable and expected.

While I miss my g'rents, I'm not sorry to see their bigotry disappear from the planet.

That's like my relatives. Every so often one of them would say something that would just SHOCK me. I'd just have to bite my toungue & remember they were not born in Southern California in the 70's, but a backwooded part of Ohio either during or before the depression. They've lived in a world radically different from mine. That's all you can do because you love 'em to death & at that age they ain't unlearning anything.

And the part that always shocks my friends is when I tell them they're almost all Democrats. People in LA have trouble understanding that racists hicks make up such a huge voting block for party they believe is all liberal by nature.

It's amazing how people can rationalize the beliefs they grew up having and the actions they took in service of those beliefs.

If there's anything good, it's that this guy's not in a position any longer to negatively affect the lives of people he probably still deems inferior.

Maybe you should re-read the story for context, Dr. Bloor.

And yeah, you shoulda seen the look on Femgar and her moma's faces when I told them about hanging pictures of "The Trilogy."

I think when they show up next weekend I will be wearing my LBJ t-shirt and a shaggy black wig.

Yeah, I get the subtext. Just because I havent been to Bay Minet lately doesnt mean....AYAK?...AKIA

And yeah, Dr King's pic in the foyer even unnerves such seemingly forward thinking Southerners as Big Rick. They just don't understand man.

Yeah, and well, you should post a pic of the Jesus you have hanging in your crib.

I drove over The Edmund Pettus Bridge on the way to TX for Christmas. It was pretty weird.

I wonder when Alabama's gonna have a state constitutional referendum making disparaging saints like Sherriffs Clark and Connor?

I mean, slavery: STILL LEGAL HERE

Although I think that this is somewhat true, that is a rather overly optimistic statement about the status of racism in this country. I think it is not much better. Those who are racist are just less vocal about it.

Plus, we have a whole other set of problems in the race situation. A lot of these problems are perpetuated by Rev. Jesse Jackson, who although he was the right hand man to MLK jr. has completely perverted King's message. It is infuriating.

I mean, I do agree that things have gotten a little better. But, we did recently have some kids charged with lynching some dude. We got them two little girls who sing aryan race songs. and I don't think that this is necessarily an abnormality or a rarity. I think that it is just a more extreme manifestation then we normally see.
