Eric Clapton has objectively sucked since he released "From the Cradle" in 1994.

that was a good album. great sound.

That, and his glaring lack of '80s, '90s and '00s output. From his generation, I put in Johnny Cash before Elvis. Chuck Berry, too. Then again, I've never been big on "The King." He was great at what he did, but that really wasn't ever my bag, baby.

to clarify, i mean "since" as in "after," because this is arguably a good album. no room for debate on "pilgrim," and duet albums don't count.

Oh no, that's how I took it. I was chiming in.

yeah, but what's the criteria for "solo"?

Bulk of career output done as a solo artist. Between CSNY and Crazy Horse, Neil's had a lot of band-related involvement, but I think he can still be considered primarily a solo artist. The ones I'd have had a REALLY hard time deciding solo or not would be Elvis Costello and Tom Petty, because of The Attractions and Heartbreakers, respectively. Of course, I nipped that controversy in the bud by adding the '60s proviso.

I think these criteria exclude everyone.

The only one of the three for whom a compelling argument could be made about sucking for 10+ years is Bowie, but he's redeemed himself with the ocassional Heathen mixed in among his '90s/'00s dreck.

I firmly believe Bowie still has it, and is just toying with us. For sport.

The answer to this poll is Bob Dylan

I am SHOCKED that he is pulling up the rear on this poll so far (and by a wide margin). I figured he'd win, with Bowie 2nd and Neil 3rd. My personal order is Neil 1st, Bowie 2nd, and Dylan 3rd, but I never thought the voting would coincide.

Iggy's a legitimate option. Good call, though I'd probably place him in the second tier.

Fair enough, but I think his output has been way more consistent than Bowie's. Bowie's highs were definitely higher, but man, when Bowie chooses to suck, it's ugly. I'll take a Blah Blah Blah over Never Let Me Down any day of the week.

Strangely, that's the only Bowie I find tolerable in the 80s. But this has renewed by interest in hearing some 90s Pop. I'm thinking I need to hear Brick by Brick sometime soon. And American Caesar is pretty great actually.

I dunno, I'm willing to give Dylan more than one sucky decade, the last one included.

I'm no Dylan fan, but my understanding is he had at least two stellar albums in the '90s and/or '00s. Love and Theft and something else, I think. Would Bloor/LooGAR please clarify?

I'm not a fan of the "new" Dylan sound at all though. But I see where your point is made.

Still, two good albums to make up for 2 really crappy decades doesn't convince me of being the greatest solo artist ever. Prince has a better batting average than that, you know?

I've always preferred his Genesis-related jibberish ("Abacab") over that which he shat forth solo.

I personally agree with you, but also knew this poll would never in a million years be considered legit without the inclusion of R-Zim.
