I noticed recently that a lot of people have taken this on for themselves, regardless of religious affiliation. I was curious to know if anyone on this board decides to give things up for Lent as a trend or for any reason?

I think I have decided to give up giving things up for Lent.

Yep. I started a thread about it but I'm giving up Alcohol and sweets. Was originally giving up meat too, but decided I was retarded for even attempting that. The sweets isn't too bad, but the alcohol has been ridiculously hard. I think periods of sacrafice is a very good thing aside from my religious affiliation.

I remember back in like 2001 I dated a girl who was catholic and when lint came around she gave up meat and coke. I thought I'd try to be cool and gove up meat too. I made it and it fucking sucked. She dumped me shortly after.

What a chump I was.

so does that mean you are religiously affiliated and if so, is it catholicism?

I am not giving things up. I have just been curious about why people do it. I think self-sarcrifice is great.

yes, i'm catholic. But in general I think it gives me time to clear out some of the distractions of my life and reflect a little bit of where I am as a person. And in a very small way it reminds me of how fortuante I am with the life I lead. In short, I just feel I get alot from it.

Now, I've gone and gheyed up the thread.

nah. that's what I was looking for. I can see how you can be reminded in a big way how fortunate you are not only when you give things up, but more so that you are even able to give those things up.

For some reason I have given up red meat. There was talk of alcohol as well, but Femgar needs several glasses of wine on a nightly basis to be able to handle being engaged to a monster.

As was said in the other thread, I am a Z-grade Catholic at best, but I think I was instilled with the strongest part of that religion: GUILT.

I'm all about moderation, not necessarily giving things up cold-turkey.

it's not about being insane. it's about humility and sacrifice for only 40 days -- the representation of Christ going out to the desert to think if he could really sacrifice himself for mankind's sins AND being tempted by the devil all the while. look, christianity, especially catholicism has, is, and will be a cycle that begins w/ advent to welcome the coming of the baby Jesus at Christmas and ends/begins w/ Christ's death/resurrection at Easter. some, like me, take this to heart and take it seriously.

for this lenten season i've given up listening to sports radio and sportcenter-related tv, something that i like to listen and to watch regularly.

I am so in the dark regarding all of this. I don't know what Lent is. I don't know when Lent is. I don't know what it means.

I didn't know what Ash Wednesday was. I was really confused when I saw people with ash crosses on their foreheads (though I didn't see any in real life).

This is all way over my head.
