Just picked up this cd, and man this is some pretty great stuff (not that souljazz ever puts out bad stuff), and lovingly currated at that. check the audio clip. if you're in the mood for some old-school reggae instrumental stuff with some funk to it then check this out.

now you recommend me something unexpected. this is how the game is played.

Great recommendation. I always describe it as if you imagine Booker T Jones was born in Jamaica, he would sound like Jackie Mittoo.

I'll play along and recommend something that I listened to a few times over the weekend...

Little Anthony & the Impreials (different record actually, but it's an old vinyl out-of-print thing and I couldn't find an imige online)

With a career spanning the 50s through the 70s, these guys had a remarkable string of soul hits, stretching to the 50s doo wop classic Tears on My Pillow all the way through Shimmy, Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop, Hurts So Bad, I Miss You So, and Take Me Back.

Essential R&B. Just grab any carreer spanning hits package and enjoy.

for a music-inclined site this is a disheartening dearth of responses.

slow music day 'ruound these parts, i think.

I often tout Yazoo Records as one of my favorite labels. One good pick from their line-up is

Barbecue Bob - Chocolate to the Bone

This is someone who sold way more albums than Robert Johnson, but is largely forgotten today. Notable in that the guitar accompaniment is 12-string. Unfortunately, Barbecue Bob Hicks died of pneumonia before reaching the age of 29.

A relative obscurity that just popped into my head:

Barbara Lewis

Wonderfully smooth pop-soul singer who recorded a few albums for Atlantic in the mid-'60s. She even wrote a few of her own songs including her biggest hit, Hello Stranger.

Shoo-bop shoo-bop.
