Oh, I know your opinion, it's been duly noted. Maybe I shouldn't have counted you twice. I'll wait it out, I'm sure we'll get another one.

You could explain it sometime, but you can't use 'how ghey it sounds' as a reason for not listening to The Smiths. I listened to pretty much the same stuff as you and never had alternative radio or anything like that growing up in the woods. Actually I never heard a word of The Smiths until I was in university (although I had heard of them). A friend of mine put on one of their albums (I think it was one of their singles comps) and I immediately thought it was really interesting. I thought the lyrics were pretty funny and morose in contrast to the actual music which I still think is really jaunty. I still find lyrics like "And if a ten-ton truck, kills the both of us, to die by your side, well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine" absolutely hilarious. He's pretty unique and polarizing based on the amount of hate, so I'll take that over bland and uninteresting.

"They"

It's hard not to use that word when it comes to collective statements. But, yeah, I was suprised to read about how Morrissey's themes resonate with the male hispanic psyche, particularly Mexican psyche.

I think it grew out of solo Morrissey's interest in rockabilly music, but the Mexican diaspora in this country ended up taking as much to the Smiths's themes of alienation and isolation.

It's rare that I like anything I can't groove to.

I don't mind that it sounds Ghey, it just needs to have some kind of nice flow to it. I have tried several times over the past 5 or 6 years to like them, or at least keep a rekkid on for longer than a minute or 2.

My bro's friend Issa gave me a comp that I couldn't get into
After that first Ryan Adams rekkid I figured I was missing something. Still, no dice.
Last year when I did that "Ipod Erasing" thread I tried again.
That's more than I give most things.
I guess this is where I re-iterate that I just don't like most 80s music made in England.

I don't feel a need to read the rest of this thread because the fact that someone hasn't heard of a semi-obscure UK act from the 80s doesn't surprise me at all. Why does this surprise you Todd?

Because I wouldn't call them semi-obscure.
They were pretty damn big.

A valiant effort was made on your part, which is more than most people actually give. If you're not liking English 80s pop, then hey, what you gonna do? I love that stuff so I guess that's why I took to the Smiths so easily. Same with XTC over the last weeks.

No shit! If there's one thing I wouldn't call them, it would be obscure.

Step outside of your "indie" culture for a minute and you'll see 270,000,000 Americans who haven't hear of The Smiths.

They were a huge British band in the 80s. It's like calling Depeche Mode obscure because they aren't from the US.

Geddy Lee would crush them, if they admitted knowing the Smiths, so those Canadians (AND DEM QUEBECOIS) wouldn't even if they did.

Very good, I hadn't considered it but that covers most of southern ON.

Plus, Love Spit Love's version was in the movie The Craft and then went on to be the Charmed TV show theme song, a show which every red-blooded male who likes to see women in tight clothes kicking people should have watched at least ONCE over the past eight years.

Depeche Mode filled the Rose Bowl. The Smiths never had that kind of popularity.

i don't hate the Smith's. I'm just glad i don't have to sit through my friends monthly Morrisey or Smith's obsessions where two or three albums got played every day and all the hooks and choruses ran together.

but you can keep me in the negative tally if you like.

Fair enough that was maybe a poor comparison choice, but they were hardly obscure.
