Yeah, Rear Window gets the vote from me, too--Top 20.

One thing you rarely see discussed about Hitchcock are those little experimental moments in nearly every film that just. don't. work. F'rinstance:

- Rear Window - The fast-motion Benny Hill-esque shot of tenants running out into the courtyard
- The Birds - The quick series of still shots of an open-mouthed Tippi Hedren noticing the spilled gasoline flowing over to the guy lighting a cigar
- Marnie - Zooming the camera in-and-out on the safe to signify Tippi Hedren's obsession
- Not to mention the wretched rear-projection in many of the later films

I'm amazed he didn't look at those things in the editing room and go "well, that didn't work like I thought it would!" and yank them right out.

The Birds really sucks.

Otherwise I'm a big fan. Especially North By Northwest.

He claims he wanted it like that. That he wanted stuff to look fake & the production design to be weak.

And no one mentions a "guffin" aka a plot device used to move the story along that is never really revealeved. The guffin most of you know is the case in Ronin.

All I know about Vertigo is, I rented it with a girl once, and we got bored, so we got naked. One of my favorite movies for obvious reasons.

i believe it's actually a mcguffin, but essentially the same. yeah, i love that about psycho how it was all triggered by an affair and a bag of money, but nobody ever mentions them.

Ahh, I wondered what they were referring to in Oceans 12 and what essentially the movie ended up being.

If I remember correctly, Hitchcock is one of three directors to remake his own film. The first was Cecil B. DeMille who did both the silent version and the famous Charlton Heston version of The Ten Commandments. Who was the third? Or were there only two and I'm mis-remembering.

I love Rope, though most people I talk movies with have never heard of it. Maybe I'm not talking with the right people.

I've heard that Hitchcock shows up as an extra in all of his movies, somewhere. I have no idea where he could be hiding in Rope, though.

This is true: http://www.geocities.com/eedd88/hitchcock.html

The Rope one is kinda iffy though.

Interesting link - I didn't realize he made so many movies.

I noticed that site has The 39 Steps listed twice, and only has the later version of The Man Who Knew Too Much so it may not be a complete list.

I took a class on him in college. I actually got credit for watching all these awesome movies and writing short papers about it. He's a genuis. I love looking for his cameos.

Rope is considered one of his subpar movies, although, I've always liked it.

If I remember correctly he shot in segments of like 15 minutes. Meaning a "take" was 15 minutes long.

Something like that.

North By Northwest is one of my favorite movies of all-time. That's about all the hitchcock I've ever seen. I've got vertigo coming via netflix in a couple weeks.

There is a big oops in North By Northwest that I'm surprised Hitchcock didn't catch. Near the end of the movie there is a gunshot in a crowded area and in the background you can see a kid stuffing his fingers into his ears before the gun goes off.

Almost as bad as Sonny Corleone's phantom punch when he's kicking the shit out of Carlo in the street in the Godfather.

I put this on a film trivia quiz for some friends once after reading the entire Leonard Maltin movie guide. I think I came up with 5 at the time.

Frank Capra - Lady for a Day/Pocketful of Miracles
James Whale - The Kiss Before the Mirror/Wives Under Suspicion
I'm thinking John Ford had one, but I'm probably remembering wrong.

This was a few years before Hollywood started buying the rights to foreign films and having the original directors remake them in English (e.g. The Grudge).
