CDs are tops for me. New vinyl sounds terrific, but I have a very low tolerance for pops and skipping.

The obvious solution is to buy vinyl in good shape and take care of it AND clean it before you play it.

i'd repeat that David Cross spiel where he denounces CDs on Mr. Show, but I'm a lazy man. and a forgetful one.

What Billz said. When it's time to go portable, I use MD.

Prefer CD, but more often listen to aac on the ipod as I spend most of my time at work.

I can't tell a sound difference, but putting on a CD commits me to listening to something instead of just switching between tracks.

I really can't either, but I was mainly thinking of the medium. When I'm listening to cds, I'm at home playing them on my stereo. I'd prefer to be sitting on the couch, cd case(s) in from of me than having those damn earbuds in.

That's what I was trying to say...It commits me to listening to the whole thing, so that usually means I am at home (got the stereo set up, finally, along with a fine sitting parlor for reading and music listening. Sunday Morning is about to become Heaven again for me) OR in my car..where if I have the ipod I am constantly changing, sometimes mid song....whereas with the 6 disc, even if I go random all, I usually put in a themed set, with maybe one change of pace.

And if you gave me a Pepsi Challenge between all of these mediums, I doubt I would be able to tell the difference. So its about aesthetics more than anything pour moi.

Word. Vinyl for tangibility, digital for portability.

You need to come over and hear the original vinyl LAMF. You'll be able to tell, trust me.

My vote went to vinyl, because it is my format of choice, when the choice is available to me. 75% of the new music I buy is on vinyl.

The superiority of cd's in the voting makes me happy.

There is hope.

I also have a low tolerance for not being able to play my music at work, so vinyl is out. Also, the CD ripping process is much "cleaner" than the vinyl ripping process (in other words, it sounds better in the end).

Vinyl, but I never have time to listen to records anymore. I'm also not very good at taking care of them. But when they sund right, they win.

CDs are what I listen to most. I don't spend much time in transit, so CDs actually seem like the most time-saving, portable music device for bringing to work. Every day I can just grab 8 different discs rather than having to manage an mp3 player.

Vinyl on a good system. Hands down.

yup. when i go to see dj's spin, none of this cdr/i-pod bullshit.

however, i can't live without my i-pod. it's just so easy to have 60 gigs at the palm of my hands. but at home, vinyl or cd's. i need to get a new needle for my turntable so i can listen to vinyl again.

I keep everything in lossless, not because I think there's a preceivable quality difference, but in case anything should happen to the discs, I have perfect copies to restore them. Plus, it's nice to have access to the original data while I'm away at school.

Sketch Wrote:
The increased portability and accessibility is huge for me. Those gains far outweigh whatever quality loss I hear between CD and VBR via EAC/LAME.

What version of LAME/what preset are you using? 3.97 b2 with the -V2 --vbr-new switch should be completely transparent from the original, like The Mayor said. You should try this setting and ABX it with a program like foobar2000 to the original WAV, to see whether its a placebo effect that causes the perceived difference.

i was pondering this question earlier, so i took inventory around my apartment. i have 3 tape decks (2 in the kitchen), 3 turntables (2 in the kitchen), and no real cd players. (i play cds on either my computer or dvd player.)

i think i'm going with vinyl.

I listen to compact discs 90% of the time. The reason is that I like the sound, the booklets, the liner notes, and the feeling of having a physical library of music to look at.

For the car, I encode about 8-9 albums into 192 kbps MP3s and burn them onto a CD-RW every week. I do this because my car has one of those slot-loaded players where you put the CD into the open slot and the player automatically pulls it the rest of the way and I don't trust those devices with my original, factory manufactured CDs.

I plan to buy an iPod once Apple releases one with an AM/FM tuner built into the device. I won't use it at home, but it will be handy when I travel to school or work.
