What kinda name is Thelonius Monk, anyway? Must be some of that scary crunky shit that's all over the M-T-V. Four in one? What's that like double vaginal, double anal?????

Act your age, Todd and listen to jazz or something.

I liked that quite a lot. I've always wanted to hear Thelonious Monk, but have never had the exposure. And overall, jazz is a daunting field to consider from an outsider's perspective, one just don't know where to begin. An example is Monk's discography in allmusic, it's a nightmarish list for a novice.

This album is a great place to start:

And it happens to be the collection from which this version of Four-In-One" came.

Search for him. I axed people here just about a week ago, and it's got suggestions and what-not. I picked up Brilliant Corners from yourmusic.com for six bones.

I've been using yourmusic.com at lot to beef up my jazz collection, as well. I just picked up Ornette Coleman's "Complete Science Fiction Sessions" 2 CD set. I've also been downloading some jazz from Rhapsody.

It terms of digging into a new genre of music, I've always found a good way to go is immersing yerself in any outlet that's free - say, a local radio station ( college, probably ) that plays jazz, or Internet stations ( DR Jazz is a good 'un ) . Even the jazz channels on yer cable/satellite music service, if you have it.

The key is to just soak it all in, & decide what you like & don't like.

science fiction is fucking crazy! that version of rock the clock is on some serious acid freakout shit. and interesting fact: the bassist on that album sired two members of that dog. unfortunately.

Here's a good site for expanding your jazz collection:

But in all seriousness, I liked the song. I just can't sit at home and listen to jazz. I have to be out at a jazz bar, drinking gin and tonic or something along those lines.

Weird...seeing as I just read the thread about Jack Black marrying one of the that dog girls.

I haven't listened to the Ornette CD yet - but I'm takin' it to work tonite. From the reviews I read this 2 CD set sounds like an awesome release.

That Ramsey Lewis album is such a great and underappreciated album

Soul Jazz and spiritual jazz are two of my favorite genres of music.

Thelonius Monk is great but I wouldn't recommend going the best of route that Todd did. I'd rarely advocate going the greatest hits route for any genre, but especially not in jazz where at least to me its important to hear the session as a whole rather than a miss mash of recordings from different times with different players.
