Classical is the only genre I really don't listen to or really care for.

It's not that I don't like it as much as it's never really inspired me to listen more or capture my attention. I can see why people would like it but just isn't my thing I guess.

If you think indie snobs are bad, you should see classical snobs. Ha!

I have the same problem with Classical that lots of others seem to with jazz:
I just don't know where to start.

Although, this album is on my "To-Buy" list:

I grew up on mainly classical and jazz. When I was around 18 I got into my Dad's classical record collection. I wanted a college radio show so badly that I told them I'd "even do the classical show"---which I got.
It was a really fun experience. I learned a lot too.

Lately I've been getting back into some of that stuff although this means buying the stuff on CD as my dad's records are in Mtl.

My most recent classical-related happiness:

I had an old cassette of music form my dad that was badly marked. I had found it years ago in a pre-internet time and therefore had no way to find out what it was (save for getting a knowledgable person to id it for me).

Anyway, the short story is that I tried the title online, found a sample of it and figured out what it was: George Lloyd, Symphony #5. He's not that well known, but god, it's beautiful! I ordered myself and copy. You should check it out if you're into Romantic classical.

Other classical I dig:
+Ralph Vaughn Williams ("Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis" is crazy!),
+Rachmaninoff (his "Vespers" are insane),
+Scriabin,
+Chopin,
+Debussy,
+John Williams (more 20thC),
and also more 20thC stuff like
+ Glass
+Reich

You like the more "modern" stuff, eh? That's cool. My favorite is Beethoven, because he totally rocks. But I also dig, Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, Dvorak, Sibelius, Shostakovich, Prokofiev.

Oh yeah I forgot Dvorak, Sibelius, Shostakovich, and Prokofiev. They are wicked too.

Sibelius's "Swan of Tuonela" is gorgeous.

It is. Also, try his violin concerto. Wow!

I tend to like a lot of the medieval choir music and some of the modern "avant-guard" classical stuff such as Holst and Ligeti which is more experimental than traditional classical.

Most recently I thought that the soundtrack to The Pianist was really good.

Of course, for me there's always love for Mozart, Beethoven, and Scarlatti too.

Very cool. I think this is the most open-minded music forum I've been in. And that's great.

Tchaikovsky: was he a tortured soul who poured out his immortal longings into dignified passages of stately music or just an old poof who wrote tunes?

Sibelius' Violin Concerto makes me cream my jeans. Although, I only know about it because of one of my classical snob friends. ROCK, you're not him trying to be tricky are you?

I don't really listen to much classical otherwise. I like just vocal stuff though. Some of the songs that Vienna Boys Choir do are really great.

My thing with classical is I really wouldn't know what to buy.

It's not like you can pick up cd's of Bach performing Bach or Beethoven's debut album. So if I wanted to buy something by Beethoven, I wouldn't have a clue who to pick up.

If I had a classical music snob friend, I'd be all into it.

I'm not that big on Tchaikovsky, so I was joking around. I do like a few pieces though, mostly the shorter stuff.

Classical snobs are all over the Amazon reviews. Search on a selection and read the Listmania's that pop up. Or, you could ask here, folks like the Prince of Darkness can easily steer you in the right direction.
