the late--Mayan Temples (first Sun Ra i'd heard)

Nuclear War
Reflections in Blue
Jazz In Silhouette;
Space is the Place is everyones favorite. It's great. It's the most accessible and will be on everyones Sun Ra list as far as I know because of the fact that it's so accessible and the huge amount of albums he composed are rare finds.

So you complain that Space is the Place will make lists just because it's accessible, and then you list three other albums that are far more easy-listening than that? None of those albums even go out of the realm of typical jazz. "Nuclear War" is like a rock song without guitars.

The real answer to this thread is:

no i didn't mean accessible music wise. i meant accessible physically.

and no complaints. for an album of his that's easiest to get it's well deserving of its "accessibility"

i hate how i have to pry apart everything i say for you. you've known me long enough. you should get me by now retard.

Visits Planet Earth/Interstellar Low Ways reissue package was always my favorite, but it has a soft spot in my heart as it was my first experience with the myth of Sun Ra.

All I know are some of the early (50's) albums.

That said, I rank them thusly:
Jazz In Silouhette
Supersonic Jazz
Sound Of Joy
Sun Song

This is great idea for a thread.

I kind of don't know where to start with him. My man is a big fan. He has a bunch of Ra records but they're all packed up still. The Ra discography is a little intimidating.

We caught the tail-end of the Arkestra's show here last Fall. :)

I've only got a few Sun Ra albums. My favorites are probably Heliocentric Worlds Vol. 1 and Atlantis.

Space Is the Place and Lanquidity are pretty good, too. Actually, those four are all that I have.

I just started getting into his stuff...I downloaded Heliocentric Worlds Vol.1 & Strange Celestial Road from Rhapsody. I was disappointed that they didn't have Atlantis available cuz I've heard loads of good stuff about it.

I enjoy what I downloaded, but was slightly disappointed that it wasn't as "weird" as I expected.

Atlantis and about half of Space is the Place are much wierder than Heliocentric.

Really, I find these the most "accessible". "Strange Strings" is totally freak.

Arkestra's playing here in June!!
