I saw this on DVD this weekend. I came close to losing control of my bowel. Sick/Disturbing/Great. Gave my wife nightmares.

Thought the movie was good yet overrated....The two sex scenes though were awesome though.

I saw this on Friday and thought it was great as well. It's on schedule for a second viewing next weekend.

William Hurt was in a different movie entirely. He is terrible.

I'm smug and over the top. Nominate me!

I was very disappointed with the turn this film took when dealing with his character. I did like the final scene at the dinner table, however.

is today opposite day? william hurt was excellent in this role. it was the best he's been in years. that "barbed wire" line was delivered so well. i had it in my head for days afterward.

are you referring to how this movie turned out as opposed to the graphic novel it's based on?

I was pretty disappointed by this. I love Cronenberg, but this was like two films compiled into one. It starts out as a small-town murder mystery/satire, which was great, and then all of a sudden it turns into a shitty cat-and-mouse mafia story in the last act. All I could think about was Adaptation, with it's deliberately shitty closing act, and wonder if Cronenberg was doing the same. The last scene was pretty good, though.

In typical Cronenberg fashion, I thought the sex scenes were uncomfortable.... the first one, I felt like I was watching something I shouldn't be (like a fly on the wall), but yes, felt it was realistic in its portrayal and therefore okay (still wouldn't categorize it as hot)... the second one, I felt like it was forced and not particularly enjoyable for Maria Bello's character.

but she was just asking for it.

i actually thought that one worked on a certain level, but yeah, a little discomforting.

I'm with Mr. Walsh on this one. I like William Hurt in general, but his part in this felt like jokey play-acting.

Otherwise I loved the film. The 2nd sex scene was quite disturbing when I first watched it, but I think it fit with the context of the story and their relationship---i.e. her accepting him and acknowledging the "violence" within herself. At least that's how I saw it.

Pretty heavy movie in terms of the issues it deals with on a level beyond the basic story. Guess that's Cronenberg's thing though.

Jayzus. I've gotta remember to keep my vow to NOT open any film threads.

I thought those sex scenes were ridiculously bad. The wife dressed as cheerleader? The anger turned to passion? Both were awkwardly delivered cliches. I remember people in the theater were laughing... (or that might have just been me).

I thought that the second sex scene was anything but laughable. What got me more was the level of the killing. I mean, horror movie killings can make me laugh and be much more graphic. These just make my stomach turn. And I still couldn't look away.

pretty much. i mean his bit is kindda funny when taken out of context, but completely goes against the texture and tone of the movie upto that point. whereas ed harris adds that extra element of twisted humor into his role without going overboard with that shit, or making a parody of himself.

good movie, possbily not as great as some ppl claim it to be. but goddamn, that opening sequence (of 5 minutes or so, with those evil evil fuckers) was just cold classic moviemaking. gave me the chills. i haven't felt that uneasy at a movie in a long long time. some portions of the movie was pretty spotty, and the ending at the dinner table as a whole looked pretty terrible and contrived, except at the very end when he is looking at her eyes (and you sorrta remember teh line he says to her after they are done making the love) and then credits roll.

The movie was passable as an action drama, but very predictable. I guess it would have helped if I didn't know what it was about going into the film. I kept hearing about "the twist," which as far as I could tell was merely him admitting he wasn't always John Stahl. Surprise.

The scenes of violence made it worthwhile.

I watched this tonight and wasn't that impressed. I liked the action scenes and gore but I have no idea what Cronenberg was trying to say with this film and the ending didn't help. Maybe I should watch it with the commentary.

Fucking sucked. The only thing that made this movie "Cronenberg" was the extremely graphic close-ups of blown-off face and nose shoved-up in dat brain. Complete waste of time and money on my part. It was cheesy.

Dogville did this to me a couple of weeks ago, as well as started a small domestic dispute.
