Jason Molina's live show is great, sometimes fantastic. That record is OK. He needs to put out a real MEC album already.

Eno/Cale - Wrong Way Up

What do you think about that one? I really like most of it, although it's not very weighty stuff. Story goes that there wasn't too much they saw eye to eye on during these sessions and hence the five daggers shown between their faces on the cover. But if it is true, I don't really hear it or even care. This is some of the best pop music Eno did since his heyday in the 70s. Maybe one or two missteps over the course of the 10 songs but so engaging and highly listenable it hardly matters. Very entertaining to hear Cale and Eno trading verses over these catchy rhythms.

If you're a fan of Brian Eno and John Cale, you might also like Hector Zazou who has been described sometimes as the French Eno. He's collaborated on a couple albums in the 90s with Cale. The one to find is called Sahara Blue by Hector Zazou and it is based on poems of the 19th Century French symbolist Arthur Rimbaud. It is one of the largest and most eclectic gatherings of talent for one recording as you are ever likely to find featuring such diverse artists as the previously mentioned John Cale, Bill Laswell, Brendan Perry, Lisa Gerrarad (both of Dead Can Dance fame), Barbara Gogan, David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gerard Depardieu, Dominique Dalean and many others (over thirty in all) with lyrics sung in six different languages. It's quite an enchanting musical adventure that beckons you to read the lyrics and soak up the beauty of Rimbaud's poetry. They also collaborated on the Songs From The Cold Seas on which Cale does an upbeat song with Suzanne Vega. It also has beautiful songs by both Bjork and Jane Siberry, as well as worthy contributions from Siouxsie, Harold Budd, Marc Ribot, among others. I'd recommend both, but the Sahara Blue disc is not widely available anymore. Think I might've made a post about it before around here but he's kind of off most people's radar.

Thanks for the tips, Davy.

I like the disc quite a bit.
It's not the best thing that either has done, but that would be asking a whole lot. It is an excellent pop record with some really interesting stuff going on that requires repeated listenings.

I listen to my other records by these guys more, but I always enjoy Wrong Way Up when I put it on.
