Rob: Why'd you have to tell her about the store?
Barry: Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know it was classified information. I mean, I know we don't have any customers, but I thought that was a bad thing, not like, a business strategy.

The very definition of it.

Seymour stein- I’ve been lonely
I caught a glimpse of someones face
It was mine and I’d been crying

Rob: Liking both Marvin Gaye and Art Garfunkel is like supporting both the Israelis and the Palestinians.
Laura: No, it's really not, Rob. You know why? Because Marvin Gaye and Art Garfunkel make pop records.
Rob: Made. Made. Marvin Gaye is dead. His father shot him.

[Rob has just placed "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on a top five list]
Barry: Oh, that's not obvious enough Rob. How about the Beatles? Or fucking... fucking Beethoven? Side one, Track one of the Fifth Symphony... How can someone with no interest in music own a record store?

perhaps my favorite line of the film

Rob, I'm telling you this for your own good, that's the worst fuckin' sweater I've ever seen, that's a Cosby sweater. A COSSSBY SWEATER!

Rob, top five musical crimes perpetuated by Stevie Wonder in the '80s and '90s. Go. Sub-question: is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins, is it better to burn out or fade away?

Barry is genius...anyone love the book too?

Definitely. I think the book is better than the movie, and I liked the movie a lot. Just Sunday I recommended the book to my wife, but I'm not sure if she'll read it or not.

Barry: How about the Jesus And Mary Chain?
Customer: They always seemed...
Barry: They always seemed what? They always seemed really great is what they always seemed. They picked up where your precious Echo left off, and you're sitting around complaining about no more Echo albums.

Read this book in early '99 unaware who Hornby was or that a movie of it was being made.
Thought several times while reading, "You know, Cusak would be really good if they made a movie out of this."
Odd.

Great book. Great movie.

was definitely thinking the same thing.

dig on the book also. some of the book scenes are so good but didn't translate well. but i mean that's why they left out the bit where he goes to pick up the records from the bitter girlfriend.

I need to go watch this again. Or better yet, re-read the book.

Boy, it's fun to remember a time when Jack Black was actually funny. It seems like such a long time ago.

Loved the movie, but never read the book. Is it still worth reading eventhough I've seen the movie?

I read this book at least once a year.

And I've had some of those relationship conversations alarmingly close to verbatim.

I'm a dork.

yeah, but you're in a thread full of guys quoting High Fidelity. We're all dorks.

but yeah, I think this eerily mimics many lives that I know, mine own included.

James, is this really the only book you've like more than the movie? That's terrible.

Not too long ago I went through a... two or three week (maybe?) period where I watched this movie nearly every night before I went to bed.

I've been meaning to read the book again.

no, it's the only time that i've seen the movie first, yet preferred the book. i should've clarified that. i usually get around to the books way before the movie comes around, so that scenario doesn't happen very often.

Saw a movie this afternoon and they were playing the Jack Black version of "Let's Get It On" over the pre-show commercials and it made me want to fucking punch the guy in front of me.

Good movie, good book, but that part was a huge, huge error. See, in the book, the character sings the Beatles to redeem his flaws at the conclusion. Totally different from this dude taking on Marvin.

Yeah, the song has been overplayed, but that doesn't give Jack Black the right to minstrel-show it. I love Marvin Gaye.

Well, he's got both the Tenacious D Movie and Nacho Libre coming out this year...

and, he's still hysterical - just hasn't had a "comedy" out in 2 years or so...
