nah...don't get the bowie albums. those are the virgin reissues which aren't as good. look for the rykodisc versions used.

bmg's got a really strong collection of essential jazz albums. If you are still trying to get into jazz use this as an opp to buy some in bulk.

I'd recommend:

Archie Shepp - Attica Blues (A MUST!)
Hank mobley - Soul Station
Sonny Rollins - Tenor Madness
Gabor Szabo - Spellbinder
Albert Ayler - New Grass
Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
Horace Silver - Serenade To A Soul Sister/Cape Verdean Blues/Song For My Father
Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay
Lee Morgan - the Sidewinder
Jimmy Smith - The Sermon
Jimmy McGriff - the Worm
Lou Donaldson - The Natural Soul
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage/Headhunters/Speak Like A Child
Quincey Jones - Walking in Space
Thelonius Monk - Brilliant Corners/Solo Monk

good idea; jazz at BMG can be tricky cuz they got a mix of old cds with new remasters w bonus cuts and even a couple SACDs ; stuff can disappear, e.g., Monk's Music remaster

Archie Shepp - Attica Blues (A MUST!) ///they don't got fire music
Hank mobley - Soul Station (pretty short album; remaster but no bonus cuts but this is the one to get by him i agree)
Sonny Rollins - Tenor Madness /// currently they only version they got of this is the SACD hybrid but it's 24.98 and would count as 2 CDs i bet; a new 2 CD they got is The Essential Sonny Rollins: The RCA Years
Gabor Szabo - Spellbinder
Albert Ayler - New Grass (they don't have Spiritual Unity)
Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby /// not a remaster it appears (i would have sworn they also had companion Sunday at Village Vanguard remaster w bonus cuts but all alts. but it's not currently listed;)
Horace Silver - Serenade To A Soul Sister/Cape Verdean Blues/Song For My Father /// this is a good choice but not a remaster i think: 'Horace Silver And The Jazz Messengers'
Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay
Lee Morgan - the Sidewinder i think this is the RVG remaster; good call
Jimmy Smith - The Sermon
Jimmy McGriff - the Worm
Lou Donaldson - The Natural Soul
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage/Headhunters/Speak Like A Child
Quincey Jones - Walking in Space
Thelonius Monk - Brilliant Corners/Solo Monk other monk: Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane (SACD Hybrid) and it's only 18.98 list same as ordinary CDs; also Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane At Carnegie Hall (2005 release of uncovered tape)

I did an album title search for SACD and most of the SACD hybrids are 24.98. Some 18.98 exceptions are Derek & the Dominos : Layla and Clapton 461 Ocean Boulevard w/ bonus cuts , Carpenters Singles, and a few Elton Johns. The Dylans are 19.98 so may not work for enrollment as a 1 disc selection.

A great jazz get from BMG is 'Mingus Ah Um' remaster. they currently don't have a lot of Mingus for some reason. Snap this one up!

this is a top 100 list link i saw on acclaimedmusic.net ( i think it's compiled and updated like acclaimed does for rock):

Old Rank Artist Title Year
1 1 Miles Davis Kind of Blue 1959
2 2 John Coltrane A Love Supreme 1964

Buck Wild comes with the great post again...I don't know about all those Ken Burns comps though...I'm sure that they are quality. I just find I really would rather listen to a complete session recording of one band.

Some other things I forgot:

Bobby Hutcherson "Montara"/"Oblique" - he's one of my favorites
Rahsaan Roland Kirk "Domino"
Dexter Gordon "Our Man in Paris"/"Go"
Johnny Griffin "A Blowin' Session" - another personal fav
Sonny Clark "Cool Struttin' "
Cannonball Adderley "Something Else"
Jackie McLean "Right now!"

And have you heard "New Grass" I actually like it more than "Spirtual Unity" although I'm definitely in the minority on that one.

Your post wasn't there when I posted...try a bunch of country then.

American Milestones is a great series of reissues and I know that they have a whole lot of 'em.

I wouldn't do BMG unless yr gonna quit right after you pay for 1 cd. Yourmusic.com rocks my world and I can order a cd a week for $5.99 with no s/h. Plus, its owned by BMG so the catas are the same.

My initial order of seven from about a year ago:

The Fiery Furnaces – Blueberry Boat (by far the best of the bunch and one of the best album of this century)
PJ Harvey – Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea (another classic)
King Of Convenience – Riot On the Streets (great)
Razorlight – Up All Night (not as good as I thought)
AutoLux – Future Perfect (good, not as great as people say)
Roxy Music – Avalon [remastered] (classic)
The Walkmen – Bows + Arrows (have only heard once)

Sign up a friend:

Gang Of Four – Entertainment (Expanded Rhino) ( :D )
Daft Punk – Discovery (because of that other board, fucking amazing!)
Franz Ferdinand – s/t (very, very good)
The Strokes – Room On Fire (I like the White Stripes so much better)
The Libertines – s/t second album (great)

Sign up a friend:

Led Zeppelin:

1, 2 ,3, 4, House of the Holy, and the double Physical Graffiti.

BTW, I’m and will always be a rocker, next is Bob Dylan...

If you are a Cure fan than get the remastered version of these albums and you will be overwelmed, they have blown me away...

Unless it has changed, when I did the math, BMG is actually the better deal.. not by much if I remember correctly, something like 40 cents a CD.

And I know about BMG, believe me... I know how to work it for me.. thank you, come again

Last time I tried to cash in music points on BMG's website to get a free CD, the site automatically charged me $18.98 + $4.79 S & H for the Eels Blinking Lights without giving me any tyoe of verification screen. Soon as I hit "proceed to checkout" it charged my card. I was supposed to get it for just the S & H. That may have been a site glitch, but it's also the last time I ever order from them. Not paying 24 bucks for a CD, no I don't think so.

Everyone seems to get so annoyed by the automatic shipments like their mailbox is going to get infected if an reo speedwagon cd touchs it. Its really no big deal. If an unwanted cd is automatically sent, just don't open it up, write "return to sender" on the box and drop it back in the mail. It gets credited back to your account when BMG receives it and as long as you don't open it, you don't pay postage. Once I figured this out, I stopped making a big effort to remember to try to respond to the orders in time. Once they figured out that I was returning every cd they automatically sent with postage on them, they stopped sending them to me.

Agreed. I dont use credit card payments because that is just silly. Also, when I sign up I shoot them an email telling them that I never want their monthly CDs -each time you send it, I will send it back-therefore it is in your interest not to send them to me. Each time, this has worked.

i'm guessing you are a fairly well orgnized person.
i am not. anything involving me to remember anything--including paying bills--is an effort.
a bmg set up is just not conducive to my personality.

as for the reo cd...i don't really care*..it's turned into one of those christmas presents my sisters and i repeatedly send to each other every year.

*the sammy hagar album did sting a bit though.

Yes, but I expected at least a "your selection is a double CD and does not qualify for our suck-ass music points system" I mean I've been a member for five years, you'd think they love me by now and want to stroke my e-shaft a bit.

Yea but having been a member for five years, shouldn't you have already known that double cd's don't qualify?

My point was I didn't get a confirmation screen or the choice to alter my order. When I clicked "proceed to checkout" it billed my card and gave me the "thank you for your order" screen. That's not supposed to happen.

There's always been several options to verify or change your order.

I'm with TJ42 on this one...that 40 cents a CD is worth it for the superior setup yourmusic.com has.
