CYHSY of 2006

Their album was released in '05. So that doesn't really work, regardless of what they sound like.

alright, so i went to check out this band last night... and let me say it was an awesome show.

the first band that was on, cold war kids, was actually good. usually i don't care for opening bands... but this band reminded me of the walkmen gone 60s/psychedelic style. they definitely had a different sound to them. lead singer had similar vocal style to the singer in the walkmen, and the backup vocalist had high falsettos which imho, made the band.

blackbud was the next band. boring. stayed upstairs and drank.

tapes n'tapes came on and after the first song, the drummer broke the snare so they borrowed cold war kids.' (and then towards the end of the set, broke it again). while they were fixing that, the lead singer kept us entertained telling stories about sxsw (go figure)... he was pretty funny. i seriously fell in love with the drummer, i wanted to take him home and put him in a jar! so adorable. he was rockin it out. all in all, i would say they do live up to their hype.

i managed to get the setlist which went like this:

cowbell
iced bergs
just drums
in houston
crazy eights
beachgirls
omaha
manitoba
buckle
insistor (god this song RULES)
jakou's

go see them live if you can. :rawk:

Huh? Sounds like CYHSY or Arcade Fire? Not at all, unless of course you have better drugs than me. More like Pixies/Pavement/early Spoon with a bit of Violent Femmes and Feelies thrown in at times. Sometimes the vox sound a little Tweedy-ish to me, too.

Thanks for the SXSW linky. I'll definitely have to check out their show when they make it to the east coast.

i think the comparison to cyhsy is the hype. lot of hype about cyhsy last year, lot of hype about tapes 'n tapes this year.

I think they were just implying the hype factor...

Ah, I see. But I don't like CYHSY so I'm saying they're the Bloc Party of 2006 :)

Anybody else warmed up to these guys? I finally got this album and am digin' it a lot after about 10 listens. I like the comparison above to early Spoon. That seems to fit but T'nT is catchier.

I don't think they are as good as CYHSY or Arcade Fire. It's ok, but nothing stands out and grab me on the album like those discs.

Remind me of Television. In my top five. I think they are lot less precious than bands like Arcade Fire or Spoon. Direct and quirky at the same time.

After letting this sink in for a few months, it's not a disc I necessarily grab and listen to all the time, but when I do, I enjoy it. Nothing earth-shattering that'll keep me coming back for years, but a good, enjoyable listen.

I love that song insistor, the rest of it is merely good indie rock. I walked out of their show last month and didn't even bother seeing them at pitchfork.

This band have received so much hype across the country but in Minneapolis everybody seems to pretty much ignore them. I think the album is ok but I could have spent my money on better things.

I bought their album a couple weeks ago, and I do like it now that I've had the chance to listen to it a few more times. And it just so happens that they're playing in St. Louis next month, so that'll solidify my like/dislike for this band.

But it still came out in 2005 so it's kinda getting on my nerves that it has been on so many year end lists.
