I guess the edginess (or balls in your words) was removed from the Ramone's music for me after reading too much about them. My fault I guess b/c I do still like their music.

i don't hate em...Defintiely have written some great songs over the years...just never grabbed me to the extent where i ever desired to hear them outside of the random times i played the radio....

Offspring hit it big around the same time, and i think i enjoyed their harder edge sound, so i chose sides...

Maybe (assuming you're talking current bands), but that's kind of like saying someone makes the best shit sandwich.

i'm listening to Insomniac, which shiv just sent to me in the mail right now. weird coinkydink. i can see how the new Green Day can be on the serious side, as the band really has "grown up" (i mean, what are they now, 30?), but i don't see how anyone can say that a band that released an album with dogs throwing shit all over the place on the cover as being "too serious".

i love dookie (hazy memory, but at least in my top 20 Listmania, if not top 10) but i don't think the album is underrated. it sold like 10 million copies or something. the critics liked it too from what i remember.

as to why people don't like Green Day (i don't know that many) or pop punk in general, is maybe because they are coming from the false assumption that it's easy to make a pop punk record.

It sure seemed like The Ramones took their music seriously. Johnny sure did, anyway.

I'd call the Buzzcocks pop punk, though they may be more frequently categorized as "post punk." And I love 'em.

Defintely. But he played it off in the music well. You would never know that if you didn'tknow the back story.

I don't care if the buzzcocks are still making music, I don't consider them a current band. I consider them a 70's/80's band.

never owned it and was definetely dismissive of it at the time but SHIT, there are some great singles that have held up on it.

I'd probably classify it as "underrated" I'm perplexed as to why people hate Green Day.

I've heard other Green Day albums but I've never felt the need to own any others except this one. Lots of great singles.

Dookie is very good. But over time Nimrod has come to rise above it for me. I think it's overexposure.

I mentioned this record last night to somebody. I mentioned it in the way of "while I have nothing but respect for bands that only play original music, but shit sometimes it's so bad I'd rather just hear their shitty Green Day covers" and the dude spent the next hour thinking I was this massive Green Day fan. It was odd.

So post-punk now refers to bands that started before punk became a widely used term?

Did you see that Dukie punk Williams post-up last night? Or Paulus' pick and pop?

I don't hate or even dislike Green Day. But what makes their music and most of modern day pop punk in general weak is that most of the bands that play it today grew up listening to nothing but punk music whereas 70's punk bands were into lots of other styles like early 50's rock, rockabilly, RnB. Those influences seeped into their music and gave it a much greater depth (even if it was simplistic at its core). Listen to the Ramones and feel the love for RnB. Listen to the Stooges nad hear the same. Listen to the Clash and hear the love for reggae, dub and yeah r&b again. Listen to Social D and hear the rockabilly influences. Listen to green day and all you hear is a band that loved punk, only listened to that and never had an original thought of their own. It just seems too hollow and derivative to take very seriously. I can enjoy a single or two because some of them are pretty catchy but I have no desire to sit down and listen to one of their albums.

i think it was the first band i had to come to terms with liking "first" and then becoming huge.

I like a lot of pop punk bands but never really liked greenday. I always thought their songs were boring. I like a couple of their singles but never enough to buy a cd.

I can't handle much "pop punk" in one sitting, for sure, but sometimes if it's well-done, it's fun.

To some degree i agree with you. i'm able to discern other degrees since i'm such a pop punk fan boy.

these pop punk bands either formed post 1994 and/or are still releasing records so i'm calling them modern. i suppose i can't deny the ramones influence found here, but in addition to that, i'd like to mention:

beatnik termites - surf/oldies mixture. they are doing a doo wop album in the near/late future

travoltas - huge beach boys/phil spector influence. very deep harmonies. some albums of theirs were produced by Marky Ramone...

young hasselhoffs - well, they sound like Green Day, but also like the Everly Brothers, and play a good number of acoustic songs

grieving eucalyptus - old-fi poppy punk, with a country sound a la carl perkins or roy orbison.

boris the sprinkler - a poppy punk band no doubt but more influenced by pop culture than by any music

i'll post about 20 more tonight or tomorrow

oh my god, i can't believe grieving eucalyptus just got mentioned on this board. (i knew them growing up, have seen them more than probably any other band, and own everything they put out before becoming the tumblers.) i would've never thought of them having a country-ish sound, but i can hear it on a few tracks.

z - what else did they have besides the full length and the one or two 7"s? also, do you have any contact info for the band members? and in regard to the country-sound, i know a lot of people say GE had a 50s influence like Buddy Holly, but i don't hear it so much. there's more twang in a few songs, something i would equate with Sun artists that leaned on the C&W side of pop.

there was the full-length, just plain rock'n'roll, and three singles - superdooper (1994), "johnny made me do it" b/w "all you can eat" (june 1995), and "you're so lame" b/w "dance" (1998). i think that's it. i'd agree with those saying they had a 50s rock'n'roll influence, but i do hear the country-ish sound on the recordings, especially the album. my basis is mostly their shows, which were like sock hops sometimes.

i haven't kept in touch with anyone and i live in chicago now, so i haven't even seen anyone in a couple years. i saw kevin at a show a few years ago. angelo was living in philly and used to ask a friend of mine about me, but we haven't talked in a long time. and i was never close with mindie, so i've got no idea. i think things kinda got bad between angelo and the other two when he left and they brought in a new drummer to become the tumblers.

whoa, kutztown!
