What is his best album, and a few of his best individual songs?

The only album of his I have is his debut and the songs I like most off it are Secret Heart, There's A Rhythm and Heart With No Companion.

Also, Feist does a cover of Secret Heart that's pretty good.

I really like all his albums that I have - cant really go wrong. I would say the worst is Cobblestone Runway. I like Retriever and Whereabouts best as far as the albums go. Best song might be Cheap Hotel off of Blue Boy.

I think Cobblestone Runway has my 2 favorite songs of his on it, but is the worst album as a whole.

It's criminal, the lack of press this guy gets. outside of Canada, anayway.

The first 2 songs on it.
"Former Glory" and "These Days"

that song that they redid with Chris Martin pisses me off tho.

I really need to hear more of him. I don't have a single good reason why I haven't heard more.

I think I had his 2nd album at one point but didn't like it as much as the first and just never took a chance on him again, which is probably stupid as he's gotten some great reviews.

Blue Boy is his best album by a country mile. Rarities and Grand Opera Lane are also very good. Steer clear of Retriever.

As for songs, here are some of my favorites:

"This Song"
"Not Too Big"
"Keep It In Mind"
"Disappearing Act"
"Spending Money"
"Happiness"

I'm with Cotton...he's one of the most underrated solo artists around.

I really like the lead off track from Blue Boy, "This Song" - like FT mentioned.

Retriever is the one I got into him with. Don't necessarily count it out. "Tomorrow In Her Eyes" especially.

This is a timely post for me as I was wondering what his stuff was like after hearing a song he did with Ane Brun. Ane Brun is amazing by the way, she is a Norwegian singer/songwriter living in Sweden and her voice is so soulful and lovely and I just can't say enough good things about her. You can sample her songs here:

http://www.anebrun.com/mp3/ane_mp3.html

Pull down the menu of songs and see "Song No. 6" which features Ron Sexsmith. Also, listen to "My Lover Will Go" which is haunting.

See also her MySpace page:

Drool :p

I only have 3 or 4 of his albums. Blue Boy is my favorite of what I have and I'd always assumed that it was a consensus favorite. Clearly I'd probably like most of his albums.

I wonder though if the lack of a clear favorite amongst obnish is:

(A) a reflection of the strength of his catalog,
(B) the inability of the obnish to agree on much, or
(C) both.

I suspect the answer is (C) both.

My vote would be 'C' as well.
I own :
Eponymous - Other Songs - Whereabouts - Blue Boy - Cobblestone...
and like several of the tracks on each. (with Cobblestone being my least fav)

'Other Songs' is fantastic.

Timis = God (or equal deity of your choice)

I think Whereabouts has some great songs on it, but the overproduction kinda kills it. I'm a little leery going into this new one because of Mitchell Froom manning the controls again, but we'll see....

So outside of the Ane Brun track I mentioned earlier, I wasn't familiar w/ him at all. This is an interesting album, it really starts off "adult contemporary" so so and then goes into a very Paul McCartney-in -his-prime type vibe which saves it. I'm interested now in what RS's earlier stuff may sound like (/me bats eyelashes).

Wow, and here I was having one of those "my life sucks and my existence has no bearing on anyone so I may as well just... [fill in the blank]" days.
