or most of the rest.

Example: Ken Stringfellow - "Cyclone Graves." I wish he were always this good.

wouldn't this concept apply to every album?

Yeah, but many albums that have a couple of good songs are geared toward the pop market and the songs are really good pop songs.

Someone like Stringfellow isn't really pop, but some songs are ordinary and too nice.

I mean individual songs that are so much more interesting the rest of the CD that you keep trying to be a fan even if you realize you're pretty bored by other songs on the same recording.

Or maybe Artists who ALWAYS have a couple of great tracks, but not artists who had one standout hit and sucked the rest of the time.

Okay...so that's still vague. There's some artists who are mediocre all around, some that are pretty decent all the time, some that suck all the time and some that are incredible all the time. But occasionally there are acts that are consistently brilliant on a few songs here and there and never get consistently brilliant all the time.

Well I'd say 'Float On' from 'Good News For People Who Love Bad News' but that might make Modest Mouse fans mad, so let me just say it's simply my opinion and my opinion is no more and no less valid than anyone else's opinion.

It's just I don't like that album very much. Especially the guys voice, but the music ain't that hot either. But once again let me just say that's my own personal opinion, I don't mean to annoy people - I'm not saying their crap or worthless, all I'm saying is I don't like them. With the emphasis on I. They simply don't appeal to me.

They may of course appeal to you. Cool, I'm fine with that, but when asked "Konstant, What's a bad album with a song on it you like?" the answer that immediatly springs to mind is 'Good News For People Who Love Bad News'.

So my answer would be Modest Mouse for the band, 'Float On' for the song (that I like) and for the album it would be 'Good News For People Who Love Bad News.'

I love this album. It's sure to make my top 20 this year.

For Your Sake is my favorite.

Bowie and Matthew Sweet are like this. A few brilliant songs and the rest are hard to listen to.

I meant most recently. When did Ziggy Stardust come out? 1972? Don't tell me you haven't heard his output since then! Such highs! Such lows...

<---- Still a big Bowie and Matthew Sweet fan regardless what they continue to put out, even if they don't measure up to their earlier work.

100% Fun ("Sick of Myself") was my immediate answer to this question.

"El Salvador" by Athlete. One of the best pop gems I have ever heard (and it came out last year)...and the rest of the album is "meh"

SHUT UP YOU CONDESCENDING FUCK I HATE YOU I HATE YOU!!!!!!

Is this the only Modest Mouse album you've heard, btw? Just curious. I MEAN THERE'S JUST NO WAY YOU COULD REALLY MEAN THAT JUST NO WAY!!!!!!

As for the thread topic, I'm having trouble thinking of anything right now. Someone please say something controversial so I can argue with you. (Slow work day.)

There's quite a few albums I can think of that fall into this category, but the most egregious offender has gotta be Sheryl Crow. "If It Makes You Happy" and "There Goes The Neighborhood" are songs so good that they almost make me a fan, but the albums they come from are forgettable mainstream product.

Some others:

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Now I Got Worry: I keep this cacaphonous mess entirely for the song "Wail".

Robin Lane & the Chartbusters: "When Things Go Wrong" is one of the great lost '80s singles; the rest of the disc is dull dull dull.

Ambulance Ltd.: "Primitive" is a cool tune; the rest of the album is unmemorable.

No Dice: the lead-off track "White Sugar" is one of the best "Tumbling Dice" rip-offs ever; the rest of it makes Emotional Rescue sound like a classic.

Public Image Ltd.: it's stretching a bit because the whole album is at least interesting, but the song "Public Image" is really the only one I play on a consistent basis.

Red Rockers Good As Gold: it's really all about the single ("China").

Patti Smith Dream Of Life: "People Have The Power" = good; all the rest = *snore*

The Romantics: there's a reason "What I Like About You" is the only song anybody remembers off this.

Re: Modest Mouse

Drinky, yes this is the only Modest Mouse album I've heard.

Yeah, it probably doesn't matter. Even a lot of longtime Modest Mouse fans don't like GNFPWLBN, but I think it's pretty good. You might be able to find some songs from the older stuff that you like more than "Float On", but I don't know if it would be worth the effort for you. The dude's voice has always sounded that way, and he used to do his signature guitar harmonic thing (which is cool but gets monotonous) on like every song from first two albums.

Some song highlights (in my opinion) from older MM albums:

Dramamine
Tundra/ Desert
Heart Cooks Brain
Doin' the Cockroach
Styrofoam Boots/ It's All Nice on Ice, Alright
All Nite Diner
Whenever You Breathe Out, I Breathe In (Positive, Negative)
Gravity Rides Everything

Those are more or less chronological.

The list of songs is a good primer. If you can put all of the hype machine out of your mind, give a really close listen to Moon & Antarctica- lyrically one of the best records ever IMHO.

I feel the same way about Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes off The Moon & Antarctica.
