The Good

1.My co-worker and nemesis at my job left. Instead of replacing him I was given his responsibilities which meant some more money.
2.Celebrating with my Mom her 5 year anniversary of being cancer free.
3.Being the best man at my buddy's wedding.

The Bad

1.My wife contracting freakin' meningitis and things being quite dicey there for awhile
2.My wife having surgery to have gallstones removed.

The Ugly

1.The whole office atmosphere/experience is just really wearing on me. Tired of the politics and BS.
2.Being the best man for my buddy and organizing his bachelor party. Jeez, that was more stress than I needed. Trying to organize a bachelor party in Jersey from Atlanta was a pain in the ass and I ended up having to lean on a few of the guys to get them to put up their share of the dough. I found the wedding day to be more stressful than my own. Just didn't want to screw up.
3.I have seriously fallen off the wagon as far as staying in shape. What a big fat mess.

The Good :

1. I moved from monitoring Album Rock to Modern Rock stations, which is more up my alley. Less REO, more REM.

2. Got to see live & meet The Wildhearts after 10 years of being a die-hard fan.

3. Moved into a MUUUUUCH better apartment, for only $50 more a month.

The Bad :

1. Both remaining grandparents passed away.

2. Work atmosphere the least stable it's been in the 6 years I've been there.

3. Supporting the Edwards presidential campaign to no avail.

The Ugly :

Just the whole tenor of about half the people in this country.

The Good
1. Moved in for real with Lady KPH. For the first half of 04, we were sharing a room in a 2B with Thom and Velouria in the other room. Very nice to have our own place.
2. Developed new friendships with a few folks for whom I have genuine admiration and affection.
3. Stayed at one job the entire calendar year. Crazy!

The Bad
1. Stayed at one job the entire calendar year! I'm running myself to exhaustion but going nowhere fast! Crazy!
2. The onset of late 20's musician reality check stuff.
3. Did nothing to help get myself out of debt, which will likely prevent me from moving to India with Lady KPH in mid-05.

The Ugly
1. Parted ways with a side project band after hearing the following from the lead singer: "You'll never hear me say thanks to you. Not ever, ever, never. Don't come crying back either, you go it?"
2. Got pulled over for expired plates. At the time, I had 3 beers in me and was under the limit, I'm sure, but that was too close a call.
3. The Arcade Fire. For serious.

KPH

The Good
1. Finally got the kitchen remodeled.
2. Went on an amazing family cruise in the Caribbean. Also, got to visit Boston for the first time and was duly impressed.
3. Got a raise at my job, and a bit more street cred around the company as a result.
4. Finally conquered the mental nemesis Summit to Surf (57 mile bike ride with 4600 foot elevation change). Was in amazing shape during the summer when it really counts.
5. Finally got my Prius.

The Bad
1. Finally cut off a "friend" who hasn't really been a friend for a long time. Unfortunately, a lot of headaches/tension/worrying went along with it.
2. Continuing political bullshit at work.
3. Didn't stick with the rigorous workout regimen after the summer, and it's starting to show (but it's not so far gone that it's impossible to repair).

The Ugly
1. Credit card debt. All my spending caught up with me, and I'm paying for it big time (in addition to the home equity loan for the kitchen). I'm pretty much a pauper these days.
2. The stress and ensuing depression that led up to and followed the Presidential election.
3. A bit close to number 1, but just being on a strict budget again. I know it will pay off in the long run, but it's frustrating and embarrassing at times.

Now if that had happened to me it would have been on my Bad list.

ugly:
the trials and tribulations of finding a new job. and I found a new job, and realized that it's not what I had expected. But I have a 3rd interview monday for a job that I know I'll love, so soon I might be able to bring the job hunt to 'Good.'

Oh, don't get me wrong... believe me, we're PAYING for this, so it's not like it's been a cakewalk. But seriously... the kitchen was horrible and not very useful. It's been a welcome change, both mentally and functionally. It was something we'd been wanting to do for a long time, and due to my husband's job instability for roughly 4 years, we couldn't. Plus this means the house goes up in value too.

The Debutantes are ALSO playing their first gig ever. (Their name will never again be as appropriate as it is right now.) They are a more standard pop-rock three-piece who, mercifully, play all their parts live. And, in fact, they seem practiced and polished and ready to go in all but one respect. The instruments are all good, with interesting bass lines, beautiful guitar parts, and dynamite drumming. The problem is the singing. He's got a really weak voice, soft and breathy with wobbly pitch. This is doubly frustrating because, first, one of the best singers in Boston is the bass player and doesn't even sing backup, and second, the songs themselves are really good. Bright, catchy melodies that set off the lovely guitar playing to perfection, so I really want to be able to hear them better.

sounds like you made the right move.

Living in an East End flat
Good: Spacious, has a bath, in-unit washer, gated community, great curry all over the neighborhood, lots of transport options, ethnically diverse area, parking space (which I don't use), not to far from school
Bad: Not living near any of my friends, a long ways away from the office, a bit pricey, right along the street (bright & noisy at night)
Ugly: Sink leak, mounted coat rack fell off the wall, the closet is falling apart

Drama School
Good: great new friends, learned a lot about acting and myself, became clear that it's an interest not a calling, used it as an excuse for a new haircut which I really dig, staff recognized and appreciated my effort and progress
Bad: 75-hour weeks w/ job, stressful, exhausting, challenges are emotionally-based, which is TOUGH, leaving school means not seeing my great new friend very often
Ugly: Trying to explain to a bunch of aspiring actors that I don't aspire to be an actor

Work
Good: comfortable, regular hours, something I'm good at, great pay and recognition, good people, lots of time to post here and elsewhere
Bad: Would prefer an office in London, not emotionally nor spiritually fulfilling
Ugly: Getting acquired twice in an 18-month period: the second one being a hostile takeover "Into the flood again..."

Other
Good: my best friend having a baby after years of trying, being in the wedding party for another best friend, East Coast road trip featuring chase and nico, Denver trip featuring elephantstone and that crew, running the CMJ fantasy football leagues and winning another championship (have won at least one league four of the last five years)
Bad: finishing the year with job/location uncertainty of the Oracle takeover, still uncomfortable in my own skin and way too hard on myself
Ugly: my fat belly

Good: Still relatively healthy despite blood pressure issues, as are close loved ones. Issues with PhD data analysis were not as fatal as originally appeared which will allow me to finish by degree by April. Will be able to present work at conference in Dublin in June.

Bad: Work environment is killing me. Still haven't got a post-doc position in Saskatoon where my wife is starting a job in another month and I'm relocating to in April.

Ugly: Aforementioned data problems nearly ended degree. November 2004 is one of my worst months on record.

Overall, 2004 is gettting a C+ grade from me.

Good
Started off the year with getting engaged
Got married
Charlie started new meds and is now doing unbelievable at school
Charlie is finally happy
My brother had his first child, a little boy, in August.
I Started a very peaceful new job
Moved into a high rise my brother built
Short commute now
Josh started working doing something he truly loves
Riviera finished their album

Bad
Lost an uncle to leukemia right before Xmas
Not that happy at new job, but working on it.
Gained ten lbs
Spent most of the year extremely broke
Had a falling out with a close friend and it's still not 100% repaired but it's a little better.
Became super depressed this year and turned into a hermit; need to break out of shell.

Ugly

1.Josh lost his long time job rather suddenly. 2 mos before our wedding which was nasty timing.
2. I learned my MS took one more nosedive this year, taking it from rather passive to super aggressive. And my eyesight keeps ending up the main casualty(keeps worsening) in the war, so it has me on pins and needles a lot.
3.I also found out I have very very low blood sugar and can no longer be a party animal or drink caffeine. Or eat lots of things I'd like to. Doesn't seem to stop me from gaining weight though.
4. And ended up being overdosed on steroids for a few days by my dr's partner. Which was lovely.

Good: moving on my own (I have two roommates, but they're not relations, or even friends, of mine) in the U.S.A.; marking my longest tenure at any one employment, when I hit thirteen months with my current office in September; looking up on holding on to said job for two or three more years; being in line for a promotion from clerical to economic support (I scored 91 on the qualifying exam, ranking first among takers for monolingual, second for takers for bilingue (espanol e ingles); getting a second job at a shopping-mall cineplex; getting back into reading (right now, on Irving's 'World According to Garp').

Bad: still have no woman with whom to spoon; dreading how much my insurance will go up for having a low-speed rear-ender that didn't damage my car, scraped an half-inch-by-half-inch bit of paint off her fender; taking my credit-card to the liquor sto... I mean, taking my c-c to the strip-club.

Ugly: in relation to working at the keno, I find myself gawking at far too many sixteen years old females and thinking about bending them over, putting my can of Coors Light on their back, and riding them to glory; also, I am becoming (ever so slightly) more comfortable in my skin, and when out at a bar-cafe-nightclub (other than the strip-club) can engage in mindless but impressing repartee with the ladies (as well, gentlemen... I ain' jus' lookin' to talk to girls, because life is more than blowjobs) and I think eventually I will find one (desperate, or impressed, enough) to do it in the road with me.

where was that review from?

actually, i think he has a pretty good singing voice, just that he hasn't become comfortable with how to use it in a live setting yet. as anyone who performs on stage knows, it's a whole different kind of volume and manner of singing, and you never have a clue how things sound if the monitors are crappy, etc. and the songs really are good - i wouldn't have involved myself with the project if i hadn't liked the songs. last night was their first show with username: altruism on the keys and a new bassist, if i'm not mistaken.

it was from this guy's site. i guess he writes for the noise once in awhile.

yeah i saw that alan had posted on myspace/friendster that his band was playing and at first i thought it was him you had the falling out with. that was pretty shitty what the singer said though.

Hmm, relatively calm year, not full of too many highs and lows...

THE GOOD
-Met and got a pretty decent hug from Liv Tyler.
-Met a few really cool people who I know will be in my life for a long time.
- Finally re-did my resume and regained a spark of interest in moving onto bigger and better things.

THE BAD
- Stayed with my job and remained bored and miserable.
- I have been kind of blessed to have relatives live long healthy lives, but its coming to the point, where I'm losing em in a pretty consistent fashion due to old age causes as opposed to sickness or tragedy.

THE UGLY
- New Years Eve fight that almost happened. My leg was shaking I had so much rage bulilding up inside me.. Would have ended real ugly for the other person or even me...Most liekly I would be in jail.
- Thats bout it.
