From Pitchfork

Quote:
Canada has free health care, legal marijuana, and state-sanctioned gay marriage, but America's free-wheeling neighbor to the north won't be getting Morrissey.

Canada's annual seal hunt has put it at odds with the king of all vegans, prompting Morrissey to refuse to tour the country in support of his forthcoming album, Ringleader of the Tormentors. In a statement on the fan site True to You, Morrissey said, "I fully realise that the absence of any Morrissey concerts in Canada is unlikely to bring the Canadian economy to its knees, but it is our small protest against this horrific slaughter." That, sir, would be an understantment.

According to Moz, the Canadian government argues that the "cull," as the hunt is called, is a sustainable, economically viable activity based on sound conservation principles, but Morrissey remains offended by "the barbaric slaughter of over 325,000 baby seals which is now underway."

He continued, "The seal population has looked after itself for thousand of years without human intervention, and, as the world knows, this slaughter is about one thing only: making money. The Canadian government will stream all of the pelts into the fashion industry and this is the reason why the baby seals are killed with spiked clubs that crush their skulls - any damage to their pelts is avoided."

Oh, life is a pigsty!

"The Canadian Prime Minister also states that the slaughter is necessary because it provides jobs for local communities, but this is an ignorant reason for allowing such barbaric and cruel slaughter of beings that are denied life simply because somebody somewhere might want to wear their skin. Construction of German gas chambers also provided work for someone - this is not a moral or sound reason for allowing suffering."

Uh, Morrissey? You do realize that you recently played three shows in America, where George W. Bush is President, right? And he's responsible for way worse things than killing baby seals, right? OK, just checking.

He closed his statement with the following: "If you can, please boycott Canadian goods. It WILL make a difference. As things stand, Canada has placed itself alongside China as the cruelest and most self-serving nation."

Wow, us Yanks sure dodged a bullet on that one. Maybe we get a free pass because Morrissey used to live here. That's the only logical explanation.

Morrissey skips Canada. Radcliffe relieved.

Even though they have so much in common...

So, let me get this. The more seals we kill, the less Morrissey we get? Shit, I was against the hunt.

But apparently the US, with thousands of fast food restaurants, is okay.

I've been a fan of the man's music for 23 years, but the other stuff that spews forth from his mouth I don't pay much attention to.

I don't know where to begin with this. I find it hard to believe that a single person who would go to a Morrissey show would be the same kind of person in favor of killing seals. So he's not affecting the people he's against at all. He's just screwing his fans.

Secondly, come on! Everything the US does is nothing compared to some seals?

I think Morrissey should set himself on fire in the street in Ottawa to draw attention to the plight of the seals.

I think he should start a charity to send <Shift> keys to Canada.

Morrissey is being a royal idiot, plain and simple. I can't believe that neither he, or his handlers, see how ridiculous and ironic this is.

Why is he being an idiot?

The facts are Morrissey has long been an advocate of animal rights and Canada is killing 300,000 wild animals simply to make fur coats.

I'm hardly a hard liner when it comes to animal rights but the Canadian seal cull seems excessive, cruel and unneccessary.

That is awful. I never even heard of this. Is that the reason for this hunt? Fur coats? It seems odd that people haven't made a bigger fuss about it.

I had never heard of the seal hunt until last week. The papers were full of pictures of one of the hunters just about to strike a seal with a brutal looking club. The guy looked like he was having fun.

I was pretty shocked.

I can't go that far. I understand why it's been done over the years, but it certainly bothers me.

the only reason this is getting so much play in the media is because seals are "cute". the production of veal is pretty reprehensible, especially compared to sealing, but nobody cares about them because theyre not cute. its also not totally true that all the seals hunted are used for coats only. the inuit in nunavut and greenland eat seal like we do beef or pork (except they dont cook it usually).

i'm not saying the seal hunt is right, i'm saying Moz' tactics are wrong. Pitchfork pretty much summed it up.

Yeah, I read about that here.

Maybe Midnight Oil can come and sing about aboriginal rights and Morrissey can come and sing about animal rights in a big, fucking group-hug concert.

I doubt that it's only these Inuits that are killing the seals for food.
